Hello, glad to hear you are recovering from your hyster and feeling up to normal activity. Check out the hystectomy checkpoints at the top of the page. They are very accurate as to what to expect of your body as heal and recover. Good luck. In fact, if you register your hyster date they'll even email you regular checkpoints to remind you of how important it is to pamper yourself during this time.

dear lalitha...everyone heals differently. in my group of hyst. surgeries (mar. 19-22) one young woman was bicycling around 3 weeks post op. and back to her gym, although she had a few problems with swelly belly. she progressed very quickly; however, she was already in great shape. i just started back to my yoga class a week ago, partly because my long vertical incision (after 2 abd. surgeries within 4-1/2 wks. is still a little sensitive. i started out with 10-min. walks, then 20 min. around 5 or 6 weeks, now i'm taking challenging walks, incl. climbing equivalent of 7-10 flights of stairs on steps up from the ravine where i walk.

faithfirst gave you great advice on searching the checkpoints. whatever you do, listen to your body, and start out slow...you will know what you can manage. don't overdo it and undo all the surgery has done for you. best wishes to you for a complete recovery. take care.

Hi Lalitha,

Your own body is your best barometer of how much you can do, pending doc's advice, of course. You definetly do not want to overdo it too soon. Your insides are still healing, and you don't want to take a chance on messing that up! You only get one chance to heal correctly, so take your time and check with your doctor about reasonable expectations for your activities.

Walking is one of the best things you can do for yourself post-op. Resting and drinking lots of water is another. Take it slow, at 5 weeks post-op you probably aren't up for a marathon!

Walking is a great exercise! My doctor said to just rest and walk my first 6 weeks. My first 2 weeks were just around the house or to my mailbox. The 3rd week I walked up and down the street. By my 4th, I'd made it around the block. I wouldn't have called it brisk walking, though! Now I'm up to 2 miles, and my neighbors have noticed I'm walking a lot faster! Just do what feels right for you.
