postop done, no examination

Today i went for my first and only post-op appointment, i went in there thinking i would have some sort of examination, like examining my tummy, which is still sore, or an internal examination to make sure that i was healing ok, BUT all that happened was the pathology report which showed i had a small cyst on my right ovary, all other reports came back clear which was a huge relieve, she asked me if i was ok which i am, then she said, you can go now and you wont need to be seen again . She didnt mention the hrt im supposed to have so i had to mention it to her, so she went to talk to the main man and i am able to start on the livial hrt which i took whilst i was on the lupron injections, so im happy about that, the thing is, if I hadnt have mentioned the hrt to her, i would have come away with nothing, and arent they supoposed to examine you we've had major surgery. I also forgot to ask her when it was safe to have sex, im really annoyed about that, shouldnt she have discussed this with me, i havent a clue what to do, should i go and see my owm doctor and ask him and also about lifting restrictions. I cant believe i forgot to ask so many things, but most of all she didnt mention anything either, someone please give me some advice. Thanks

Hi there,
My surgery was recently, and I just went in for staple removal yesterday. He said he would want to see me again at two weeks and then at six weeks to make sure that my internal "plumbing" as he put it was okay. It does sound like you should have an internal exam. At least give them a call and ask if that is the routine.
GOOD LUCK

My Dr. does the same as yours. I had a 12 day post-op, no internal. He said I could return to work & have sex at 4 weeks. Also said that unless I had problems, he would see me in 2 years. Go figure.

I'm waiting 6 weeks for work and 8 weeks for sex just to be safe.

My doctor checked my incision at 2 weeks, did an internal exam at 6 weeks, and said he'd see me in a year.

Eegads! what a crock! Anytime you have something as major as getting your insides re-worked you should have a professional view said masterpiece and give you either a thumbs up or an "oops". How horrible that you were blown off like that. I don't mean to sound condescending, but you must become your own advocate and find someone who will check your vaginal cuff to make sure it's healing okay. It's really hard, but don't let the doctors intimidate you. You are far to precious to not get appropriate follow up care - which is a reasonable thing to seek. Good luck.

Speak to the patient liason

How dare your doctors not check you out, how dare they send you home as if you are okay now. We have been through a major surgery, we are experiencing so many side effects that are justified in being addressed. Don't let them get away with this, go to the patient liason and try to get a doctor who will check you out and not charge you since you already probably were charged for nothing. Keep going until you are heard.

You NEED to be checked internally. No if's and's or but's. And you deserve to have answers to your questions. PLEASE call another OB/GYN and make an appointment for an exam. Tell them you just had major surgery and are in need of your follow up. This time be prepared. Write down all the questions you want to ask and forgot to ask and all the things you want explained to you. I'm really upset that you were treated the way you were. Sometimes I wish the nurses and doctors that treat us (the ones that are nonchalant and insensative) would have the same surgery. I bet they would see things differently, don't you? Serious complications can happen after the surgery. The only way to have peace of mind is to get checked.

I agree get checked!!!!! I had an appt. at 2, 4 and am going back for a 6 week checkup in 2 weeks. He checked internally at 2 andfound I had a clot and at 4 found out I had an infection which we wouldn't have know had I not been checked. And I go back at 6 weeks for another internal or am to call if problems before then. You need to find someone else. It's your body and you only get one chance to make sure things are right. You are sooooooooooooo worth it!!!![u] Plus, I write down questions ahead of time so I don't forget!!

Just want to thank you all for your advice and i absolutely agree with you all, so i have made an appointment to see my other doctor for next week and i will explain to her exactly what happened ( or didnt happen ) at my post op appointment. I Will let you know what was done and said and i will also take my list of questions with me. I will ask you one thing which i was supposed to ask at post-op, will i need anymore smear (pap) tests now that i have nothing left, due to the fact i had pre-cancerous cells a few years ago and is it possible that i could have bad changes in cells elswere down there Thanks
