hysterectomy due to stinky periods?
I've been having very stenchy periods for the last couple years. I also suffer from a heavy feeling in my vagina, left sided pain, especially during my period, and a severely tipped uterus (to the left). Last year when I went in for my yearly exam, my gyn told me to try acidophilus as suppositories for several months for the stench and only advised doing more kegals that I usually do for the heaviness. I tried the acidophilus for 4 months and it did nothing for me. Neither does doing kegals more often. This year (one week ago) I went in for my yearly exam again and told him that I'm still experiencing the smell and heavy feeling but am now feeling pain in my left leg when I have my period. He examined me and from what I got out of it was that there was a pocket either in my uterus or outside of it that was collecting blood and that the blood was being overrun with bacteria because of it. He didn't comment on the heaviness. No tests were run on me....just the pelvic exam. Then he told me I had 4 options. 1. birth control pills 2. mirena iud 3. uterine ablation 4. partial hysterectomy. I am not a good candidate for bcp or the iud because my body has bad reactions to synthetic hormones. So now I'm down to choosing either the ablation or the hysterectomy. I don't want to choose either of them imo.
What I'd like to know at the moment is whether or not there are any other options out there for me to choose from (d and c maybe?)
Has anyone here ever been told that a hysterectomy should be performed solely because they experience stenchy periods and heaviness in vagina area?
Are there any tests that should be performed to rule out anything else that may be causing the stinky periods before I make a decision to choose one of the options that were laid out before me?
Thank you to all of you for being here and being so very supportive. This is a wonderful site and am so thankful for it

hysterectomy due to stinky periods?
The "stench" you describe sounds like it could be old blood? Is that kind of what the dr was suggesting? If so, I'd be questioning why it's getting 'trapped' there and exactly where.
I would think an ultrasound should be a starting point to determine if there is anything going on within the uterus you need to deal with. Also, many women have a uterine biopsy before proceding to other options.

hysterectomy due to stinky periods?
I would ask for more info from the dr , i had blood that came out a lil stong smelling and came out dark , it was from taking so long to come out it already started oxidizing ( not sure how to spell it lol). i had sever adenmyosis and close to the cervix and uterus was tilted back which the combo of the two made it hard for the blood to get out so it came out yuckk lol.

Old blood
Yes Lisaanne2, I believe that is exactly what is happening to me and what my gyn was talking about. My uterus is tipped so far to the left that my cervix appears to be located on the side, like it's part of my vaginal wall. When my period starts out, it's like a paste and very black. It's quite disgusting and smell very bad. Not much comes out the first day. The second and third days definitely make up for it
What did you have done to fix the problem with the old blood?
Thanks for your reply

Yep that sounds like me, the blood came out so thick and dark looked dark brown and wouldnt even soak in to the pad cause how thick it was(so gross ). i had a hysterectomy cause of all my other problems and i am in heaven now LOL . but befor that when the dr perscribed a strong dose of Megace that helped ease the flow of periods and even stopped me from getting periods for a few months. Good Luck

hysterectomy due to stinky periods?
Thanks for replying back LisaAnne. I'm glad to hear that your hyst was a godsend and I'm also glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem. I'm now thinking about just living with this problem for a while longer. I'm 40 years old and menopause could be just around the corner for me but I will definitely check into the Megace. It's worth a try, at least.
Thanks again
