Dear Hyster Sisters- I am experiencing very heavy, prolonged( three weeks now) bleeding- I am scheduled for my hysterectomy on Oct 15th- 3 1/2 weeks from now- would anyone know if my surgery would be cancelled if low blood count or if a transfusion would have to be done - should MD be able to tell- thanks

i'm sure your blood count will be checked before your surgery. you should let your dr know if you are still bleeding so he can check your hemoglobin. has he advised you to take iron pills? if he doesnt offer to check your count, dont want til too close to the surgery date...i assume if its too low, the surgery could be cancelled.

Heavy mensrual bleeding prior to hyst
Hi kkhardin,
I'm new here, and don't have any answers for you, but I'm in a similar situation myself and thought I would let you know you're not alone. One of my symptoms is extremely heavy and prolonged bleeding. For over a year now, my cycles have been extremely heavy and included in-between bleeding, which basically left me with only a couple days a month with either no bleeding or just spotting...until recently. I've now progressed to literally being on my 4th month straight of having my period. There has been no stopping in the flow for 4 months now, and doesn't appear to be an end in sight. I'm awaiting my actual surgery date (getting the call from the doctor today), so I don't even know yet how long I'll have till the big day. Any how, my apologies if this hijacked your thread in any way. (Not my intent) I hope you feel better to know that you aren't alone...I know it makes me feel a world better. Best of luck to you!!!

Heavy mensrual bleeding prior to hyst
I was a heavy bleeder as well. I bled all the time and passed large clots every few days. I was on iron supplements for years. I went to have my hysterectomy on Fri Aug 17 and my period was fast and furious that day. The doc told me no problem and reminded me that it might be necessary to give me a transfusion (it was a paper I had to sign, so I was aware there was a possibility). But, as it is, I did NOT need a transfusion. The doc did the surgery, closed me up and they wheeled me to my room a couple of hours later... without that nagging period! YAY! Technically, I should be on my period NOW (altho I was never really OFF it for years before my TAH), but I haven't had a cramp or any spotting or that "run down" feeling that comes with low iron. I'm no longer plagued with the never-ending period.
Be sure and call and ask your doc (or his/her nurse) about your concerns. That's what I did and it was an easy question. The nurse told me they get asked that sort of question A LOT.
GOOD LUCK!
