Premarin - Skin & Hair Problems

Hello~
I had a complete hysterectomy three years ago at the age of 37 due to endometriosis.
I was put on Premarin .625 six weeks after my surgery. At my annual physical my doctor changed to dosage to 1.25 mg.
Withing the last six months I have developed dark patches of skin on my cheeks and forehead. I have also noticed the my hair has thinned drastically.
I was wondering if anyone had these symptoms and could shed light on whether or not they will go away if the Premarin is stopped or reduced. I am concerned about stopping the HRT, but more concerned about the damage to my skin, hair & body. I hope there is someone out there that can help! THANKS SO MUCH!

Premarin - Skin & Hair Problems

The hair loss points & skin pigmentation point to a hormonal imbalance. Sometimes the supplements help such as B6, folic acid, magnesium and zinc. Evening primrose Oil has been used successfully by some ladies here for hair loss.
I think getting your thyroid tested would also be a good idea - do you have any other symptoms?
Premarin is not the same estrogen your body made before. It's not natural (only to horses) or bio-identical at all. There are a lot of other choices available to us now and better products such as estrace and also the patches which all contain the same estrogen your body made. This makes more sense to us here - to replace the hormone that is missing, not a concoction made from horse pee. Sure a lot of women do OK on it but a lot don't too.
If you go to http://www.hormonejungle.com/
you will find a lot of info on estrogen choices and also the supplements in the drop-down box.
Happy reading and maybe you could talk to your doc about this. Also 1.25mg is a reasonably high dose, some need it some don't. If an oral estrogen doesn't do the trick at say .625mg then changing to a patch or gel might be better for you. That way you might get more benefits but on a lower dose.

Premarin - Skin & Hair Problems

It is in the literature that Premarin can cause dark patches on skin and cause loss of scalp hair. The discoloration can persist even when drug is discontinued. You may want to consider natural hormone replacement therapy.
