Teeth knocked out

I am Scheduled for a TAH on 10/15/07 and my greatest fear is having my 2 crowns on my front teeth knocked off. Has this happened to anyone else and how often does it happen?

I have a crown on one of my front teeth and it is still there. I have never heard about that happening.

your anesthesiologist should ask you if you have any crowns but if he doesnt, make sure you let him know which teeth you are concerned about and i'm sure he'll be very careful. good luck

Definitely let them know which teeth the crowns are on. If your dentist did his/her job right they shouldn't come off. I was a dental assistant for 7 years. If you are concerned, you could ask what the policy is if one would come off. I would hope that they would keep it and you would hopefully be able to go back to your dentist and have it put back on. Typically as long as there is no decay on the tooth structure that was under the crown the crown will go back on easily.

Hope this helps a little.

Teeth knocked out

Ah, finally a post I feel qualified to advise on. I have more than one crown including one right in the front and a bridge in the front. The anesthesiologist should ask about it but if not tell him.

I have had surgery three times since I had my bridge put in place. It has always come through just fine. If there were a problem they would work with you to get it repaired, I am sure.

I think this is a very minor concern.

Good luck

I have a couple of crowns and a bridge and nothing was damaged during surgery. Do mention it to your dr and the hospital staff & they should make a note about it in your chart.

Best wishes.

Why is this a concern? I'm clueless and in the dark.

They intubate you during surgery. Have you ever seen that on tv? They put a metal thing in your mouth to open it up and view it and put the tube down after the scope - or whatever it is - is in place.

That is also why your throat is sore after surgery.

Because It can happen.. One of my co-workers just had hernia surgery and they loosened up her front tooth and now they are paying for a implant.

Countrysunshine is exactly right...it's the metal. I am a dental hygienist and YES sisters it does happen. I have had a few patients over the years (just this past year) tell me and show me what has happened to them because of the intubating tube. This certain patient had a lateral incisor knocked out and she needed to have a three unit bridge. Needless to say she was livid!!! Teeth can be chipped and they can be knocked out. Chances of this happening is much greater when people are periodontally involved (mobile teeth) and in need of dental care.

So when I just had my hysterectomy, and last years cancer surgery, I was very firm when I informed the anesth. that I was a dental hygienist. I proceeded to tell them that when I wake up I want to feel all my teeth just as they were before I was anesthetized. I am sure that they thought that I was a witch (insert a word that rhymes)!!!! They probably talked about me while I was asleep but I obviously didn't know! HA

So when I woke up from the surgeries I ran my tongue all over my teeth to make sure that they were alright! I am very fond of my teeth! I am happy to say that all 28 of them were fine.
