Reasons they can't do Lap

I was curious for any of those out there that has had to have TAH, what were the reasons given why it couldn't be done Lap.

I asked my doctor and she just said because of the C-Sections. But to me that wasn't an answer, why because of the C-Sections.

So, I thought I'd poll anyone who would be willing to answer to see what you were told.

I'm thinking on even getting another opinion. I am going to call my doctor and see if she can give me a more detailed answer (scar tissue, adhesions, etc.).

I guess with it being 2 weeks from Wednesday, I'm thinking of all the what if's.........

Reasons they can't do Lap

I had to have a TAH and not lap due to the size of my uterus (it was soccer ball-sized) and the cancer concerns. A gyne oncologist performed my surgery and really felt that he needed to be able to see everything. Turns out that it was a good move (since I did have uterine cancer).

My guess is the your doctor is concerned about adhesions since you have had a prior c-section. I think calling your doctor and asking specific questions is a good idea. It might be your current doctor does not possess the skills to do a lap so of the hyst types she can do, the TAH is best for you and your circumstances.

I would also suggest seeking a second opinion which is wise before having any major surgery. The second opinion may confirm that a TAH is best for you or may suggest another option.

Many best wishes to you!

Reasons they can't do Lap

I had no c-sections and my doctor did the TAH because of the size of my uterus, size and location of my fibroid. There weren't any other options for me.

Call and ask the question of your doctor. If you aren't happy with the reason or answer keep asking questions and get a second opinion.

Reasons they can't do Lap

Hi Tammijoe,

I think getting a 2nd opinion is a good idea. In my case, my 1st Dr. wanted to do a TAH due to the size of my fibroids. My 2nd Dr. recommended a laparoscopic hyst..after I did lupron shots to shrink my fibroids enough. My LSH Dr. did say...if you want a TAH...we can schedule that too.

Even with a 2nd opinion...the Dr. might recommend a TAH...and at least you heard a 2nd Dr. back up what your current Dr. said.

My younger sister just had a laparoscopic hyst last May and she had (2) C-sections and an abdominal myomectomy back in 1990 before she had kids.

As Weiser said, sometimes it can come down to a Dr's training. And also the size of the uterus and a Hyster Sister's medical file.

In the end..do what is *best* for you.

Mary

The reason that my doc gave me was that my cervix was too high, he said no way could he do vaginal or lap.

Reasons they can't do Lap

I had 2 bikini cut c sections. The dr. started my TAH as a lap but abandoned that because there was too much endo. I went into it knowing this could be the outcome. He had tried to do a lap to have a look see a month prior but the anesthesiologist couldn't get me intubated and I woke up thinking gosh, this didn't hurt at all....of course it didn't since they hadn't done anything!

Reasons they can't do Lap

I am scheduled for a lap and had a bikini c-section. My uterus isn't huge (softball, 10 weeks pregnant) so maybe that has something to do with it. You might also want to get a 2nd opinion and make sure your doc isn't choosing TAH because s/he's not trained on lap.
