Going so FAST

I've been having abnormal bleeding for about a year now. On Wed of this week, my doctor did an ultrasound and found I have fibroids that are causing the bleeding.

She contacted a surgeon and they've scheduled surgery for Wed of next week. (Helps when your doc is your best friend)

I'm the type to research everything before it happens, but this is happening very fast.

We aren't sure yet if they are doing a supracervical, or taking the cervix also...it will depend on the results of my pap. The last one was abnormal and I had to have a culposcopy. No matter what they are leaving the ovaries.

If the pap is normal, should I go ahead and keep the cervix or just have it taken while they're in there so that I don't have to worry about future abnormal paps?

HELP!! I'm so confused!!

I don't know what to tell you. I had a TAH because of fibroids and went ahead and gave up the cervix because of an abnormal pap. I kept my ovaries and feel great so far.

Going so FAST

I just had an LAVH for fibroids. The doctor took the cervix because she said if she left it, uterine tissue would be left behind as well and that could grow more fibroids, plus, some of my fibroids were pretty low. All my pap smears had been good prior to this. I kept my ovaries as well. They seem to be working alright right now. Talk with you doctor about cervix, she'll be able to answer your concerns.

The surgery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. This was my first surgery and it went very smoothly. Everyone who worked with me was fantastic! They knew I was nervous and were really great.

Good luck.

I will be keeping 1/2 of my cervix. My Doc said that the cells in the cervix are flat like floor tiles and so not real likly to bleed. He is cutting it off half way down to minimize the chance of bleeding and regrowth. He said I MAY spot but in almost 30 years in practace has had myabe 2 women have this exact surgery and then have any bleeding later on. (Please God don't let me be another one!) he said he also cauterized straight down into the cervix and that help decrease the chances even more.

Going so FAST

I'm going in for a TVH and suppossed to keep the ovaries and cervix, but leaving it completely up to my Dr. I've been seeing her for many years and she is well aware of my history of abnormal paps (I've had abnormal paps since my 20s, but no cancer so far). I've just come to terms with the fact that I trust her judgement.

She has re-assured me that if the parts are good she will leave them, but if they are not good, she's made it clear that I don't want them there.

I also consulted with my long-time internist (WHO I HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR AND TRUST VERY MUCH--HE KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT ME AND EVEN KNOWS MY GYN PERSONALLY) about this whole thing, and he gave me great guidence and additional advice. This helped me get things right in my head from the start.

I had my cervix removed. I have NOT had an abnormal pap, but my sister has had some precancer removed from hers. I just didn't want the stress of what if it happens to me too. I have not missed it or noticed it gone.

GOOD LUCK

At my doc's suggestion, my cervix went along with my uterus. She said that as long as it isn't adhered to anything and she can take it without damaging other organs, she removes it - her thought -- one less place to get cancer and there's no real reason to keep it.

It's a personal decision, though, between you and your doc.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm glad you don't have a long time to wait and worry about things. This time next week, you'll be well on your way to being a new you!
