What Does It Mean?

HELLO,

I'm new here also, I had a hyst on 10/31/07. I'm seem to be healing well except this pain that i have in my rectum area. When I go to have a BM or exspell gas, its fells like i'm trying to pass a football. I also have these pains if I don't have to go the restroom. Could someone tell me whats going on?

What Does It Mean? Bowel problems!

Many ladies do have problems with bowel issues after a hyst as the bowels take a nap during your surgery and it takes some women a little while before their bowels settle down and work properly again. Different doctors have different instructions for their patients so check with your doctor about what is best for you. You may need to use stool softeners or laxatives. Some ladies find drink prune juice helpful. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water is important as well.

in there and many best wishes to you! s

My surgery was also on 10/31/07. Bladder/bowel concerns are common, according to my doc. I wondered if my bowels would ever work again, but I've been taking metamucil and prunes. Whew! What a relief.

My bladder doesn't seem completely awake yet. My doc said that would take time. I've had one accident, I think, but it seems like I don't have the control needed. I told my doc that I just don't feel confident in my bladder control. It seems like I can't hold it, so I need to go, right away.

I had bladder sling surgery 2-3 years ago. It was well worth it. I got good results almost immediately.

I've seen folks on here who got a sling at the same time as the hysterectomy. I understand that this surgery is much easier now than when I had it. I stayed in the hospital overnight with a catheter and packing taken out the next day. Now, I think it's usually outpatient with catheter and packing taken out while still "under."

You may want to call your doc.

You didn't mention what type of hyst you had done or if you had a cystocele or rectocele repair at the same time as the hyst. I know of the pain you describe and I had a rectocele and cystocele repair at the same time as my hyst. For me, the discomfort was expected. If you did not have these done, I can understand why you'd be surprised and maybe even scared. Don't hesitate to give your doc a call if it is still concerning you on Monday. I know that w/a hyst, the bowels get pushed and pulled a little during the procedure. Our bowels are sensitive to manipulation, and they may be protesting a bit. Does this sound reasonable to you? Please let us know if you find a definative answer. You may be able to alleviate many sisters' fears. Hugs, Michelle

Also, the pain medicine they give you: percocet, hydrocodone, etc., do have a tendency to cause you to get constipated, which doesn't help. Even with the prunes, the prune juice, the stool softeners, etc., I was still only going once every two days, a couple times every three...and geeez...it was like pushing out a tennis ball (size/shape) seriously (not to gross anyone out). All that and trying not too hard to push because I didn't want to damage any internal/external incisions (it does hurt like crazy to push)...didn't make it easy. I've since laid off the pain pills for the most part (take half a pill a couple times a day still and I had my surgery on the 10th of October)...cutting back seems to have helped out a lot.

What Does It Mean? Bowel problems!

Had my TVH with A/P repair and sling on Oct. 29th - I had a lot of rectal pain and pressure which was expected - getting control of bowels and bladder back, but has been a slower process with bowels - I've just been making sure to eat fibrous foods, fruits, veggies, drink a lot, try to stay away from gassy foods and take my stool softeners religiously. Even still, sometimes I will get bloated with gas and a little constipated - Also drink mint tea - it works wonders - It seems like it takes awhile to get things working well again - also have cut back on my Percocet - Percocet seems to be much more constipating than Vicodin.

I agree that if you did not have any rectal repairs, to call your doc and see what they say, but if you haven't been doing a lot of the things at home like above and the other sisters have offered, definitely try them first and see if they help-

Hope this is helpful!

What Does It Mean? Bowel problems!

My surgery was on 10/31 and on 11/5, my bowels were giving me fits. I think the hospital staff should have started me on some anti-constipation stuff before leaving the hospital. It was horrible. If it had not been Sunday, I would have called my doc.

After I "went" I thought I had given birth to a bowling ball, but it just a tad. With consistent metamucil and prunes, I'm doing much better.

I've been having cramps nearly everytime I need to use my bowels. Amazing how much the bowels do for us!

You are so right that it takes our functions a while to get back in order. My surgery was only an hour, but I suppose there was lots of stuff going on down there.
