Endometrial Biopsy
Sorry for posting about this again, but I cannot contain my anxiety over having this "minor" procedure (as everyone, including my doctor claims).
I am VERY sensitive to any type of "uncomfortable" procedure, even if it is brief and I have LOW PAIN tolerance.
My doc is not open to doing this procedure w/me sedated in the hospital (she feels it is a waste of resources) and won't prescribe any medication. She asked me if I had an Xanax that I could bring to help calm me.
Can anyone help me or suggest anything?? This procedure is scheduled for next Wednesday and I'm horrified. I want to be asleep for it. I can't imagine that an item being stuck in to your cervix and tissue removed can be pleasant.
Can't they do this while looking under a hysteroscope, where I could be under anesthesia??
Sorry for the frantic post -- I just don't know what to do -- I want to cancel the procedure, but know it has to be performed sooner or later.
Thank you,
Chrys

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
Hi Chrys,
I get anxious too and have low pain tolerance. I try to keep myself distracted during procedures that may cause me anxiety. Even if that means chatting with a nurse during the procedure. Will your doctor allow you to bring in a friend or family member during the procedure? If you have Xanax, that does help. If you don't, can your doctor prescribe it for you to get you through the next 7 days and the procedure itself? I know Xanax isn't the same thing as total sedation, but it can take the edge off the anxiety and will help your body to relax. --- Laura

i guess if your dr doesnt feel that a hysteroscopy is necessary, she wont do it that way. you either need to just go through with it the way your dr performs it, or see if you can find a dr that will sedate you for it.

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
I had an endometrial biopsy in my doctors office it was not planned. I was having a pelvic exam she told me she wanted to do it if I was ok with it. I knew it would hurt some but I said go for it. Yes it was uncomfortable but not as bad as I thought it would be. You can do it just be brave and relax try to focus on something you really like.

I had 3 and yes they did hurt. Don't be embarrassed about expressing how you feel. If it hurts, let them know. Also I found myself holding my breath, gripping the side of the table and picturing something pleasant. Its over VERY quickly. Most doctors will want to do it in the office. I am getting one on 12/1 with an ablation, so I will be out this time but as I said, I did get thru it 3 times. If you need to make a noise, do so- Ellen

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
I just had one done just yesterday, with only mild discomfort.
My doctor was kind enough to prescribe some Valium (5MG) for me to take half an hour prior to the procedure, which helped me relax. I'm already taking Darvocet for pain, and checked with my pharmacist for clearance to take it along with the Valium (was ok'd as long as I wasn't driving myself to/from the procedure). Add to that some Motrin as an anti-inflammatory... and I honestly didn't even feel the first sample that my doctor took. All I felt was a slight twinge, which I thought was the tools getting set up in a kinda pinchy spot. When the doctor said, "Are you doing ok? I'm just going to take one more sample." I said, "You're kidding! You already took one!?!?" Now... afterwards... I've had some moderate cramping along with spotting ever since.
So, my recommendation... call and see if your doctor will prescribe a sedative for you if you're anxious or worried about pain. Then, make sure that you take something in advance for pain, whether it be a prescription pain reliever or just an anti-inflammatory.
Honestly... my pain threshhold is very low, and I'd been more worried about the biopsy than the surgery since there wasn't going to be any anesthesia... and it went just fine.
Good luck!

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
HI Chrys,
I had one a few years ago in my doctors office and was terrified as well. He didn't prescribe any meds, but told me to take 2 advil about 1/2 hour before the procedure. It was uncomfortable, but was over quickly, maybe 10 mins.
Afterwards, I did have some cramping and spotting, but it wasn't too bad.
I know how hard it is to relax when you are worried.
Good Luck
Katy

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
I had an endo biopsy in August. I had only taken IB pro. but next time will take a valium. Actually , it is so fast.. it pinched for a minute or so.then it was over! Keep taking IB pro for a few days to avoid cramping.
I put mine off for 2 months. wish I hadnt now. Surgery would have been months ago

Endometrial Biopsy -- Update, couldn't do it!
ABout 2 years ago, my doc attemped an endo biopsy but could not do it because I had never had natural childbirth. Last month I went to a new doctor and she did perform an unplanned endo biopsy... It was not pleasant & I took a lot of deep breaths, cussed & than laughed & aplogized for cussin! The nurse & doc were like, it's okay you cuss all you want! But it really wasn't that bad, I just wasn't prepared for it - which was probably better... didn't have time to "think" about it!

Ah ha! Thanks. I also did not have natural childbirth- I had a C. section. I think that's a big part of whether or not these are tolerable. Best of luck. Ellen
