Do Fibroids Make You Fat? - or "The Hungry Fibroid"

I'm 50, with several enormous fibroids, hypothyrodism and over the past several years despite being healthy and physically active my weight has climbed so that I am now around 50 lbs overweight.

I go in for surgery tomorrrow full of hope that getting these large growths out of me will help me to loose weight. But most of the posts I'm reading are people saying that after surgery they gained even more. Especially if taking HRT, which I will most likely be doing if we go ahead with the BSO.

Partly I feel that over the past years I've almost been feeding my fibroids. Several times when my weight went down, I was almost physically uncomfortable (the pressure was intense). At that time I didn't know what it was. Now I think perhaps the fibroids didn't have enough room when I lost weight. Is that nuts? Has anyone else had an exprerience like that.

Is there any hope that having this uterus out - It is so big and misshapen I think of it as "the blob" - will ultimately help to loose weight?

Is their any link between thyroid problems and fibroids?

TAH / Probably BSO tomorrow, January 8 (If I don't respond to your posts its because I'm still in the Castle - I check in this afternoon).

Do Fibroids Make You Fat? - or "The Hungry Fibroid"

Hi there

I had my surgery 7 years ago due to a large fibroid and a rectocele. I had also gained a lot weight in the years preceding the surgery. In my case, the weight gain wasn't as much due to overeating as it was due to hormonal unbalance: whenever the uncontrolled bleeding would relent, the weight would go down slightly... only to return when bleeding resumed. It also caused a lot of water rentention which didn't help matters at all.

After my surgery, a TVH keeping ovaries, I actually lost weight in the initial months: finally, my hormones were balanced

While there are some who report weight gain after a hysterectomy, especially when a BSO is involved, there are also many who report weight loss. Hopefully, you'll fall in the later category

I do wish you the best of luch with your surgery
