How long should it be before the first bowel movement? Kind of an embarrassing question! Had surgery on Tuesday, today is sunday.

Since we're all different, it varies from woman to woman. For me, I didn't have one until day 4. My doctor prescribed stool softeners for me and that's what got me going again. I made sure to drink plenty of water, eat fruit and walk during my recovery and that's what seemed to help me.

I don't know if you're taking any pain medications but they can be quite constipating. You can try the usual things we all do, walking, plenty of water (or whatever may work for you - coffee works for some), prunes, fiber, fruit, etc. There are over-ther-counter products that may help as well, but you really shouldn't use a laxative as they can be very harsh to your system, especially so soon after surgery.

Have you called your doctor? He/she will be able to give you guidance about products you can try.

I know there are a lot of women around here who have other ideas and I know someone will be along soon! Hang in there! I hope you have a smooth recovery!

I found that the pain medicine made it worse but I really needed my meds. So in addition I just took 3 of the colace with laxative in it.. That helped

Source of my constipation was Percocet - it was great when I needed it, but they were withholding solid food at the castle until I could pass gas and make doody...

Had to go with a doctor recommended suppository one night to make things happen... wasn't until I got home that I realized it was the meds... and have used them sparingly since - my appetite is back and not having the pipes moving freely makes me miserable!
