Mini periods??

Hi all,

First, thanks for all the great info..I am scheduled 2/19 for SAH. I've read you can still get mini periods. After, finally making the decision for a hyst, I was looking forward to having NO periods. Thought I was making the right decision by keeping my cervix, now I'm not sure. Advise please!!!!!

Mini periods??

Hi harleyscotld,

I am having my surgery on 2/12 and I am planning (hoping) to keep my cervix as well as my ovaries if at all possible. My choice is because I have no family history of problems with either organ and I like the idea of the pelvic floor support which my Dr discussed with me. I had a TVT procedure done for urinary incontinence last year and I have been doing great. I understand that when you lose your cervix it reduces some of the pelvic floor structure, so I don't want to chance it unless it is necessary.

It sounds like you might need to discuss this decision further with your Dr before deciding. If you have doubts, don't wait any longer. Give them a call and discuss the pros and cons so YOU can make the right decision for yourself.

Mini periods??

you greatly lessen your risk of mini-periods (usually just a few days of very light spotting or staining) if your dr cauterizes your cervix. please be sure to ask him if he does that.

Mini periods??

harleyscotld

I have mini-periods but they're uncommon. Most surgeons cauterise the cervix, thus preventing mini-periods for the majority. Mine wasn't cauterised (due to complications) and so I experience the tiniest amount of bleeding for about 24 hours every month. At nearly 3 years post-op, it's almost non-existent and doesn't even require a liner anymore. I like to use it as an indicator that my ovaries are still working!

The usual procedure is to cauterise the cervix ~ check with your doctor to make sure that applies to you. The majority of ladies don't experience mini-periods.

Sending all good wishes for your surgery!

Mini periods??

Hi Harley

I had exactly this decision to make. I found no yes/no answers from the medics. Started a thread on here, and got lots of conflicting information.

I'm 8weeks post-op. I kept my cervix, for all the same reasons Sparkle has decided to keep hers.

I was assured by my surgeon that my cervix would be cauterized. I still haven't had a chance to confirm this.

Last week I had a couple of days of severe PMS, and this was followed by 5 days of a mini-period...pinky spotting then 2 days of blood, then spotting again. It was just as the name describes and I needed to wear a pad for that time.

I was upset when I realised what it was, felt like the bonus prize for the surgery has been taken away

I don't know whether this will continue...and I know my hormones are in disarray at the moment.

Having had a few days to think about this I am still glad I've kept my cervix. I feel that the support argument is a powerful one, and although most people who lose their cervix still seem to be okay sexually and can't feel a difference, I feel like I am more normal there(in my head).

I've also got a scheduled pap test next week, so you'll still need those.

Hope this helps.

good luck with your decision. I made my final decision on the morning of my surgery!

Mini periods??

And this is yet another thing I've learned from this site that is going on my list to ask the doctor. Thanks, ladies.

I, obviously, can't answer your question but will continue to monitor this thread for some of the suggestions/answers.

I wish you the best with your surgery... mine is the day before. I'm' extremely nervous.

Mini periods??

I've never had mini periods. I also had SAH 7/12. I had spotting about 2 weeks after surgery but that was it...nothing since. Good Luck on your decision.

Mini periods??

I had my ovaries out as well, so that's probably why no mini-periods for me. I'm almost 5 months post-op (LSH/BSO) and no problems at all. My quality of life is sooooo much better . Best of luck

Mini periods??

Today was my first mini-period. It was about two drops of blood. Two whole drops. After all the months of flooding, an ER visit due to flooding, etc. I almost burst out laughing when I saw it. Two drops. Whew! I can deal with this.
