Surgery Date Changed

Hi, everyone.
You girls have been a tremendous help in preparing for this surgery, just reading each of your posts helps alot!
When I registered to this site, I was scheduled to have my hysterectomy (due to dysplasia, uterine fibroids, long, painful periods due to endometriosis) on February 4th. My surgeon called me 18 hours before the surgery and cancelled, do to the fact that she had the flu. She did not want to hand it off to anyone else due to the fact that I also have a "pelvic kidney" and she is familiar with my anatomy. SO....rescheduled for March 31st now.
I was so ready to just GET THIS OVER WITH!!!! So, I am kind of bummed that I have to "hurry up and wait" all over again.
My question is this: if you were given six extra weeks before your surgery, is there anything you would do differently to prepare? I am trying (better late than never) to get in a little better shape - walking the treadmill, etc.
I'm trying to look at the positives; more time to freeze casseroles, etc. Lol.
Thanks so much.

Surgery Date Changed

Hi Evergreene -
So sorry to hear about your delay. That is so rough.

If I had had more time, the number one thing I would have done was really worked on abdominal strength more. I did this to some extent before my surgury and it helped tremendously. I have never liked to do crunches or abdominal work on weight machines, but in the past few months I have been including that in my workout and I can really tell the difference.

You never realize how much you use your abs until after the surgery. Everything from sitting up, laying down, standing up, reaching for the TV controller, pulling on your socks, coughing, laughing, sneezing, etc. Everything hurts a little, but my new muscles feel strong and protective of what is hurting underneath (does that make sense?). My stomach feels strong and this helps so much.

The other things I did get done in the weeks ahead were:
1. Bought some new xtra large stretch pants and loose shirts so I could be comfortable, but not be in my pajamas all day. I went to TJ Maxx to look for bargains so I wouldn't feel like i was wasting too much money when they would all be too big a month after surgery. So far I am in love with my cotton/spandex Danskin boot-cut workout pants. Sleek, stretchy, sexy, and warm.
2. Washed and pressed all of my post-surgery wardrobe so everything looked neat, clean, and smelled really nice. This probably seems weird, but it helped me to have everything "perfect" . Stacked them all up on my dresser so it was a no-brainer to pick out an "outfit" those first few days home after surgery.
3. Cleaned my house like a mad woman. Everything was shiney clean and all clutter put away. I also did some re-organizing of my kitchen cabinets so that the things I knew I would want would be on the lowest shelves and easy to reach.
4. Organized my desk and made sure all of my "affairs" were in order. All bills paid in advance and files organized so I could find insurance and medical info when needed.
5. Anything else i could think of that would make me feel organized and in control of my life when i came home. I can't stand it when things are "falling apart", and I was happy and confident when i went to surgery last week that i wouldn't be dealing with those stresses when I came home.

SO far it has worked out well. Plenty of food, clean house, clean pretty clothes.

Now if i coud just get the cats to clean their own litter box, lol...

Best of luck to you and be sure to have plenty of pampering time added to your pre-surgery schedule.

Thank you so much for all the tips!
(I'm not entirely sure I even HAVE "abs" but I'll try to whip what I've got into shape!
It sounds like you are doing fantastic - so good to hear
