Hypothyroidism and HRT....HELP!!

Hi Girls,
I absolutely love this site, everyone is so knowledgeable and supportive, all the while, maintaining a sense of humor!! Wondering if anyone can help???

My TVH/BSO is scheduled for August 13th. I have hypothyroidism and am concerned about the interaction between the hypo and the hormones. If anyone is experiencing this I would love to hear from you. I'm wondering if it's harder to get the hormones stablized and what hormone combinations work best for you.

I like my gyno., but she is not very informative. I think I'm more interested in NHRT, but have to avoid soy due to the hypo. Does the NHRT contain soy? When I sit down to discuss the HRT with her, I would like to have some knowledge of the subject. I am really, truly ignorant to all this.

Any help you could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

soy and hypo

Hi Terri,

Why aren't you supposed to use soy when you are hypothyroid?

Hypothyroidism and HRT....HELP!!

Terri . Ok this one caught my eye (I'm Hypo to) and I had to get off the internet and call compounding pharmacist. This is what he told me. I am on NHRT, Bi-Est and it is from a yam base. He said that they can use a soy base if requested but it is much more expensive than yam so the norm is usually yam. Now this could differ from pharmacist to pharmacist so I would be sure and ask the compounding pharmacist that you plan to use what base their hormones are derived from.
BTW do tell your endocrin about upcoming surgery. He may want to keep an eye on your thyroid levels. Best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery and remember if needed there is always help here in this jungle

Hypothyroidism and HRT....HELP!!

Interesting discussion. From what I've read around here I would think that soy based HRT would not have an amount of soy that would interfere with thyroid, but hey this is a jungle I think the discussions we had on soy particularly what Trish dragged up was that soy supplements in largish amounts interfere with thyroid. Something to remember in the jungle, that's for sure.

Hypothyroidism and HRT....HELP!!

I just talked with my insurance mail order pharmacy today, and they do compounding, so I am going to be getting my compounding hormones from them for now on. I did ask about when is the best time to take the Thyroid med, she told me to take it has soon has I get up and not to eat or take any other meds for 1/2 hour. I'm going to start that tomorrow. Just had another blood test and my TSH dropped down some, the reason might be is I take Pro-botics has soon has I get up, then I take my Thyroid and eat breakfast, along with my vitimains. So, I think I will take the Pro-botics at lunch, I am all ready taking my Tri-Est at night with my Prometrium. Pills, pills and more pills, I need to keep a list.

Just thought I'd drop this link with some extra info on soy and it's effect on thyroid.
http://thyroid.about.com/library/wee....htm?terms=soy

It's on Mary Shomans site - which is a great reference for those of you with thyroid problems.
Hugs,
