Was told to start lupron shots today

Hi friends i have posted in the past few weeks about my period problems..i went to see a new doc today and was told from my symptoms and pelvic that i probably have adenomyosis and am going to do 3 months of lupron shots to stop my periods. than have a thermoblasion done..not sure if im saying that right. i was told my anemia is pretty bad and my bleeding needs to stop first before any procedure is done. So here are my questions? would adeno cause frequent periods? like every 2.5 weeks? does lupron shots cause weight gain? are they going to make me crazy? he told me that they put you into menopause while on them..so i will have hot flashes.are they expensive? i have an rx. to get it filled and bring it in to him..any more info would help me..thanks so much!!!

Was told to start lupron shots today

Hi Dinko3,

I did (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my fibroids for my hyst. Lupron does cause temporary chemical menopause. I had hot flashes, night sweats and I lost interest in sex. My periods also stopped which helped to bring up my blood count.

I just made lupron a lifestyle for awhile. I layered my clothing during the day...and kept an extra t-shirt near the bed...if I needed to change. I suggest drinking plenty of water while on lupron...to keep you body hydrated. I personally did not gain weight while on lupron.

You might check with your pharmacy about price before you pick up the shots. Do you possibly have insurance to cover your shots. Not to shock you...but each one of my shots cost $600. They can be expensive from my experience and reading posts by other Hyster Sisters on lupron. I also did lupron four years ago..so the price might be different now...hopefully less.

Hope that helps.

Sending best wishes~

Mary

There is alot of info on this site about Lupron. Some women it does terrible things to them mentally, physically and just all around. Others it is a blessing, pain free experience.

I read all the horror stories after my Dr wanted me on it last year...I declined scared me to death. I went another year in pain without answers and another $30k in medical bills..thank god for insurance.

I am currently on my 3rd injection, pain free and I have my life back. Get info and do what is right for you.

Also, it is expensive...call your insurance company to make sure it is covered. I think it is now $800, I pay $125 with my co pay.

Good luck, I wish you the best.

Was told to start lupron shots today

I have adenomyosis- and recently had 3 shots of lupron. On the 3rd shot, I sat down w/ the GYN. We planned on doing a single 3 month shot (on month 4) to provide more time and see what effect it had upon my pain. It has been determined that a hysterectomy is necessary.

My experience with the lupron shots was a surprise. I'd gotten the first shot as I began my period. Heavy and normal. It didn't last as long as it had been. During ovulation, I got my period again. Not just a little blood. A lot...just like my "regular". That shocked me. After my second shot, I got my period again. Though it was much lighter and didn't last long. Finally! Those darned hot flashes kicked in my second month as well, hitting frequently. I sure was worried that my third month would be even worse w/ hot flashes! Surprisingly, the hot flashes peaked in the second month and were rather infrequent in the third month.

I was unable to get the 3-month shot (due to a separate event), and am now coming off the lupron. I am 3 weeks late for that shot, and have felt like I did in the 2nd month. Very frequent, intense hot flashes are back. I suppose it will ease as time passes.

Hope that this helps you. Take care!

Sorry, dinko3. I didn't mean to confuse you.

Hysterectomy is the only way to get rid of adenomyosis- for good. Depending upon where you are in life, you may or may not be ready. I was ready, but my husband wasn't. So, I got the shots to control the adenomyosis for a little while.

The point of lupron is to fake menopause, which allows the iron to store again as well as mostly determine how to deal with your trouble. It buys additional time before menstruation returns. When it does return, many women have relief for a while longer before symptoms become big problems.

My Gyn likes to gives the lupron shots just as you get your period, to reduce the common heavy flow after a shot. I guess that technique just didn't work for me.

I hope that explains better.

Was told to start lupron shots today

I was just prescribed a Lupron shot to stop bleeding, so yes-- this is one of its uses. But essentially what it does is shut down production of female hormones, which has the effect of temporary menopause. I was told for me, shutting down estrogen would stop my large submucosal fibroid from bleeding so constantly, to give me some relief from my constant period and my scary hemorrhaging that had been present all of last week. Once I got past the first night after the Lupron shot (during which I had the worst hemorrhaging I have ever experienced), my period does seem to be slowing down. Dare I say.... close to stopping? I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Seeing the doc tomorrow about surgery options for my fibroid.

Was told to start lupron shots today

Hello
I just joined today...I am scared I have a very low hemoglogin 6.7, was put on iron and Vit.C and given a shot lupron...........I am praying my hemoglobin goes up, so I will not need a blood transfusion and I hope the Lupron will shrink my fibroids. I have had VERY VERY heavey periods for nine months. Anyone in this situation............I was told that my doctor can attempt in about three months to try to shave at my largest fibroid on my uterus and try the ablation, if this is not sucessful, I will have to have a hytersrectomy, because I bleed for 10 to 12 days and at least nine are VERY VERY heavy.........

6.7 requires a transfusion...my lowest was an 8..my doc suggested 3 mths of lupron than a thermachoice ablation for adenoymosis..now, im terrified of more bleeding..he said to get the shot right before or right after a period..that sound right?
