Eyes burning with Morphine

Hi Sistas!

Last year I had two gyne surgeries and both times I had a morphine pump. Both times I woke up in the middle of the night with my eyes red and burning and it almost felt like I had conjunctivitis. I was also itchy so that was a sign the morphine didn't like me. It was the middle of the night so the nurse couldn't give me benadryl or anthing without getting in touch with the doc in the morning?

I am worried about this with my surgery on 23rd April. I will talk to my doc but wondered what other options some of you wise women have used.

Hugs,
Tracy

all you have to do is let your dr and anesthesiologist know that youve had a reaction to morphine so they can put it in your chart. there are a lot of other pain meds they can use in place of that. good luck

I agree with (((dressedupinblue)))... there are other options - talk to the doc ahead of time. Good luck with your surgery.

Thanks so much for the info.

Does anyone know if demerol is used in a pump or is that only morphine? I have never seen another drug in a pump so just wondered.

Hugs,
Tracy

I was told that it could have been in my pump. By the time I was told this, I was on oral meds the next morning....

WOW! Thank you ladies so very much for all your info. I have just come back from my pre-op feeling totally empowered. They are not going to give me morphine at alll but promised I will get just as much pain relief with whatever we decide as a team!

Hugs,
Tracy

I just got back from my pre op and was told I can have many different drug combinations in a pump so I am one happy Hystersister!

Again, thanks for encouraging me to ask questions.
Hugs all round!
