I cancelled my surgery

I have a 16 day trip to Alaska all booked . Just 2 month to the day, after surgery. My doctor knew about this trip when she gave me the surgery date. After reading all the post on this board and complication that could happen.I cancelled my surgery. I am 58 , I was so afraid I would not feel up to this trip. We have alot of activitys planned and very long days. Plus a couple days of hiking. I was going to have a TVH with prolapsed bladder repair. I am not in any pain or have any other problems. I will put the surgery off until May 2009 ,because I work at a school , so that will give me all next summer to recover. Did I do the right thing???? I know on June 4 , I am going to say to myself, well if I had my surgery as planned. It would be all over now. Please tell me I did the right thing. Nancy

I cancelled my surgery

Hi Nancy!
You know your body best! Trust yourself. But, could you schedule the surgery earlier than next summer? Hope you continue to be painfree and have a great trip to Alaska!

I agree. Only you know your body. Just listen to it. I don't really blame you for not really wanting to chance messing up your trip to Alaska. I would just keep a close eye on you med problems.

Hope you have a great trip. Sounds like it will be a blast.

Hi Nancy! triple ditto..Only YOU know your body best. If you don't have any imminent health problem to be bettered by the surgery, do go and enjoy your trip. Hysterectomy is an "elective" surgery...You the patient, generally speaking, can state the schedule. There are some patients where the health benefits of this surgery are needed sooner than others.

Enjoy Alaska!

As the other (((sisters))) have said so well, I think you know in your you have already done the right thing. You might have felt fine for the trip -- or you might not have. But as long as the situation isn't an emergency (and it sounds like it isn't), I think you've made a wise decision. You don't need the anxiety of worrying about "the trip of a lifetime" on top of the usual surgery anxiety.

P.S. Until you have a new surgery date, best to remove the one you have now in your profile -- or we'll think you're post-op in a few weeks.

I had my surgery for the same reasons and I think you made a wise choice. I've had some issues with UTI for the first time in my life and sometimes think I would have been better to just put up with the prolapse. Have a wonderful cruise and it will still be there when you decide to deal with it. I think the prolapse with no real pain or bleeding is one of the few times that you can decide when the time is right for you.

Have a great trip.

You did the right thing I was told we need 3 months recovery, so 2 months is not enough especially when your planning a trip to Alaska. I've been to Alaska and believe me you need your energy physically and mentally to enjoy such a great experience. I don't know if I would postpone it an entire year, but that is your choice. There really never is a good time for these things. Good luck and enjoy your trip.
