Afraid not to be afraid

Well, I am 3 weeks away and am at a new place. I have been freaking out almost daily as I am a big chicken and I too like many am afraid of the post op pain. But, because of reading all the wonderful support and posts and because I am listening to relaxation tapes, I am not "constantly" afraid. Sometimes I even forget about the upcoming surgery (TAH) on July 8th and then I get scared. I know it sounds crazy but I am afraid if I don't worry, then it will be much worse then I expected. If I worry myself to death, then nothing can be as bad. I realize this is crazy. And then when I read so many of your answers about the pain not being intolerable and that the doctors and nurses help you, I think, well....maybe for them, but what if it isn't that way for me??? Just late night venting!

Afraid not to be afraid

bear lover,
hey sister. mine is july 17th I am having a TAH/BSO. I am nervous too but have spoken to a lot of women about how they have done, they said to keep a positive attitude, even the nurse at work who had a TAH/BSO 5 years ago told me to keep my spirits up as it could affect my recovery.
also, she said start practicing getting out of the bed and chairs using my leg and arm muscles. if you are married or have a partner, be sure they do not share a bed with you for a couple weeks after surgery because she said if they move aroun d it would make us hurt a bit more.
hugs sister, you'll do great, see ya on the other side.
peace, me

Great advice from the post above mine! It's great that you are not overcome with fear right now. Keep your positive attitude. That will can help you with your recovery! Good luck to both of you!

Afraid not to be afraid

Hey, my surgery is July 9th! I have episodes when I think, do I really need this surgery? Should I try to shrink these fibroids naturally? etc.. Then I think, well I really need to learn to trust people. I'm a physical therapist and I can't help people unless they trust me. So, our Doctor's know what they are doing and we need to rest assure that we are under the best care.
From what I under stand there are great pain meds available!! Now this is just a quote bu I find it helpful "Worry is payment in advance, for something that may never happen"

lildeb,
omg I so understand. I wonder if this is a necessary procedure for me, and worry that doc will get in there and decide everything looks fine and close me up leaving everything and tell me it was all in my head. sounds silly I know.
hugs sister, me.

Afraid not to be afraid

I'm scheduled for Monday and had my registration visit at the hospital today. I wasn't nervous until NOW. The nurse was quite frank about worst possible scenarios. I'm actually not really worried about pain because I know it will be controlled. I'm just nervous about being away from home and of course, I worry about something serious happening during surgery.

I never even thought about sleeping in the same bed with my husband after the surgery. I would be interested to hear how other people handle this. If there is someone else out there with some oppinion on this topic I would love to hear it.

Me neither! I told the nurse today that I would just stay up all night so I could go fast asleep the second I get to the hospital on Monday.
