When does it stop?

I am 3 weeks post-op from TVH. Have really been feeling good, except yesterday paid for overdoing it on Tuesday, learned my lesson and stayed in bed all day. I can sympathize with the other sisters who say they are going stir crazy, I know I am.

My question is when does the discharge usually stop?

I went for a 2 week post-op check-up with my Dr. last Friday. He asked me about the drainage, I told him it wasn't bad: not enough for a pad but too much for a pantyliner. In other words, just enough to be aggrivating . He examined me and cleaned around the sutures at the end of my vagina and told me he would prescribe something to help with the discharge.

I filled the prescription for Metr-gel and used it twice a day for 5 days as he instructed. Still had to wear pads of course. Woke up this morning and still had discharge on pad, looks like the beginning of a period.

All of you have been soooo helpful and supportive, you don't know how much this site and all of you mean to me.

I know that I can come here and express how I feel, and not have people turn their heads as if to say "My God, does her life revolve around having had a hysterectomy?"

Irritated that I feel like I should be doing so much more than I am.

Thanks so much for everything,
Kimmiejay

When does it stop?

You will probably have discharge for another couple of weeks. I know it's lousy, but you have many sutures inside that are healing and dissolving. About 6 weeks is normal for discharge, for some women even longer.

There is a tendency for women who have a vaginal hyst to overdo it because there is no scar. You have had major surgery! You have lost an organ and ligaments have been reattached and must heal. You have to give yourself the same time frame to heal as a woman who has had an abdominal hyst. So go lie down! Rest more, taking a short walk every day, and you will feel better and heal quicker.

When does it stop?

I have to agree. Further discharge may result from the 3-5 week period, where stitches are starting to dissolve, and you may really "feel" this surgery more.

This is exactly why the early recovery is a full 6-8 weeks long...to get you over that wall. Of course, most people don't have a clue as to how big a deal this surgery is. I sure didn't before I had it, let me tell you!

So just keep coming here, we "know the score". As a matter of fact, for the first 6-8 weeks, your life IS supposed to revolve around your hysterectomy!
This is a MAJOR surgery! Do not have the least amount of guilt for taking good care of yourself. And no, you should NOT be doing so much more for awhile...toss that idea out the nearest window. Even when you do start doing more, you will need to ease in very slowwwwwly!

My very best to you...

Linda
