Do you still need an ob/gyn after a Hysterectomy?

I was wondering if a woman has had a total hysterectomy (everything out) do they still need to have an ob/gyn? I ask because so many women since my surgery said I didn't. Is this true?

If your GP will do a full exam you may not need to. However, Gyn can check for vaginal and hormonal issues if they arise. They will check for any prolapse and abnormal tissues in the lower region each year as well.

Thank you for the response. I prefer my ob because I feel comfortable discussing all these issues with him.

I will need to continue to go to the OB/Gyn because breast cancer runs in my family and I need annual mammograms and I suffer from PMDD. GPs are great for sniffles and broken bones and such, but for specialty issues I'm going to stick with the specialists.

Even after a hyst, and even if your doctor does not recommend it to you, I'd suggest you continue to go annually for a pap smear of your vaginal area. HPV strains can pop up at any time, and these are what cause cervical, vaginal, and other cancers associated with what is left there. Most of us have HPV (my doctor now says 90% of the adult, sexually active population). Most can lick it with strong immune systems. Some, like me, cannot. So do please continue getting your exams. If you have never ever had a troublesome pap smear, then perhaps every two years would be okay. But I'd suggest every year, regardless of what your doctor might say! It's a relatively painless, speedy, and cheap way to find out if you are currently at risk for any precancerous infections. Please please please continue seeing your doctor!

I'm gonna stick with mine. I ended up having to keep my cervix because it was too dangerous to remove it because of how my blood vessels are so I'll be having my yearly checkups. I also have my right ovary so I'll want him to make sure that is ok too.

I still see my GYN as I did retain my ovaries and I do have endometriosis. I could see my GP for a yearly exam if I choose. I feel it is a good idea to have a yearly well woman exam with either a GYN or your GP. You and your doctor can decide if a annual pap is best for you to check for vaginal issues. I had one annually for the first five years and now have one every third year -- so mine is coming up in a couple weeks!

I also will continue to see my gyn, especially since I kept my ovaries and he does my breast checks / orders mammograms. I will have whatever tests he recommends on the schedule he determines is best for me.

As i get older and face natural menopause, or if the kept ovaries suddenly stop working for whatever reason, I will need his guidance.
