progesterone or hysterectomy for heavy bleeding?

Any suggestions and/or information about taking progesterone to control bleeding as opposed to having
a hysterectomy? I had a D & C in June and have just
started to bleed again. It was so nice not to bleed for 2
months! But now its back and I'm not sure what to do. I
don't really want to be on medication for a long time but
am scared to have a hysterectomy. My doctor can do the
procedure vaginally but I also have a cystocele that would
be repaired at the same time.

progesterone or hysterectomy for heavy bleeding?

Last year I started bleeding more heavily than normal(14 days and the first couple days were super plus tampons every hour). My gynecologist wanted to do a hysterectomy because of a 5 cm fibroid. A hormone specialist(also she was an endocrinologist) suggested I could try progesterone but with the knowledge it could cause it to shrink or it could cause it to grow. Problem was my gyn dr. agreed it was not an emergency to have the surgery but she would not do an ultrasound every 3-4 months to make sure it wasn't growing. She should have. At first the progesterone helped but in May 2008 I hemorrhaged from the 8-12th day of should have been the end of my period . I went to my family doctor who ordered an ultrasound and found it started to grow. I changed gyn dr. which took about 5 weeks to get into her. It grew more. By the time of the surgery it was 12 cm. If you take the progesterone you should be monitored if you have a fibroid. I saw the new gyn on July 14th and my surgery was July 30th. I had to have it I had been bleeding since July 8th and was anemic. I hope this helps you. I had an LSH but did require a 5th incision at the bikini line because of the fibroid size.

you might look into the Mirena IUD - it delivers the progesterone into your uterus instead of your whole body
i've heard good things about it from some people - it was offered to me as an option, but I decided to go with the hyst partly because I really need the bladder sling and wanted to get all surgeries done at once, and also because my experience with progesterone has always been that it made me bleed every day

Endometrial Ablation

If your only problem is heavy/prolonged bleeding, you could ask your doctor about endometrial ablation. Basically they damage your uterus, either with a balloon of boiling water or microwave device, so that the scar tissue builds up and doesn't allow it to bleed as much. I had this done a few months ago for constant bleeding, and it did help. Now I only bleed very light and only 2 weeks a month, a huge improvement. Of course I'm scheduled for hysterectomy now anyway, but now it's unrelated to the bleeding.
Good luck, I completely understand what drain it is to be constantly bleeding. Aside from the inconvenience, it can really sap your energy.
