Less Invasive Hyst

My first post--what a great group this is! I need a hyst and I've had two consults with drs. first is in my HMO group, the other outside. The HMO dr. says that my fibroids have gotten too large for him to do laproscopic surgery as one is resting on an artery & he couldn't see it with the lapros. device and he doesn't have access to robotics--I could take Lupron to see if they will shrink enough to do it lapros. but it may turn out they'll have to cut me anyway. I won't take Lupron, so that's out for me. The other dr. is in L.A. and they do all the latest robotic stuff and can do it non-invasively.

I would rather go with the HMO option and just have the hyst. surgically (just uterus, either way) because of cost. My husband is very emphatic about having the very "best" way done for me but even if I change to a PPO, it will be a huge expense.

I'll defer to my DH because I truly believe he wants the best for me and that God has given him to me as my protector--don't want to go against that... anyway, do you folks know of laproscopic-robotic capable hospitals in the So. Cal. area that perhaps are covered under insurance and if so, which insurance? I sure hope I'm not outside the boundaries here. Thanks so much...

I am sure you can find a Dr. in your area. I am in OC, if that is your area- let me know and I will help you. What size is your uterus? I am surprised to hear that, my Dr. told me it is very rare that she can't do a LSH (largest she has done is 18).

Let me know,
G

Thank you for the link--I will check it out.

I don't know what size my uterus is--one dr. said I was the equivilant of about 4 months pregnant. The reason the HMO dr. said he wouldn't do the LSH is because he wouldn't be able to see around the one that is near the artery... yes, I'm close to OC... in Whittier.

Also ask about lsh (laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy). It's not done with the robot, but a skilled laparoscopic surgeon can do great things with just about any size uterus/fibroid. I know there must be quite a few in Southern California! Wonderful procedure with little down time.
Good luck to you!!

Keep Trying

Keep looking for a surgeon that can do the laprascopic surgery. I just had the surgery 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure how big my fibroids were, but the largest was the size of a newborn baby's head. My utereus weighed 950 grams and a normal utereus weighs between 80 and 100 grams. If I can have it done, I would think you could have it done. BTW, I live in the DC area.

I just got home from my scheduled laprascopic today..... NO WAY should you go through an abdominal incision unless medically necessary. Don't stop looking for the right Dr.

Thanks so much everyone! I have an appointment the end of September. I had to switch to a different medical group, but same health insurance. What a blessing! I'll keep you posted...
