Taking prescribed medications while in the hospital

Hi, I still don't know when my LSH will be and I think of new questions every day. I have been writing them down to take with me to the doctor.
I am wondering how anyone takes there prescriptions they are already on while in the hospital? I'm on Betaseron which is a medication by subcutaneous injection every other day for MS and I am on Lexapro. I will ask my doctor about this but I was just wondering how anyone has dealt with this. I know the Bestaseron won't be at the hospital pharmacy because it's something my pharmacy has to order for me once a month. I'm guessing I will have to take my medications with me to the hospital, right?

I was told to bring it with me, just in case. But the hospital is supposed to give you any and all meds you are supposed to take. So if you are in there during the time you need your injections, they are supposed to supply it for you. If they know in advance which meds you need, they are supposed to have it on hand for you. (At least at my hospital)

I was told to bring mine with me. Yes, they are supposed to have them UNLESS the medication is unusual (this was told to me) but I wanted to make sure I stayed on my lexapro and good thing I did too. I took my own.... I prepared a list of medications that I take daily including vitamins and supplements and gave a copy to the doc and a copy to the hospital when I did my pre-op. You may want to prepare that as well and plan to bring your med's with you just in case.

Taking prescribed medications while in the hospital

At pre-op - and with my surgeon and all - I was CLEAR that I was on two different meds.

I brought both with me. Thank goodness!

They had the one for me in hosp - but not the other cause it didn't wind up on my list! NP - I had my stash!

Take a week's worth just in case.

I would ask your DR and ask the hospital at your pre-op appointment. At my hospital they were very clear that you must NOT bring any meds in with you unless your DR had it written in your orders. Otherwise, you would get only what they gave you.

It's very important that you make sure everyone is on the same page before your big day. Don't just wait and smuggle it in with you assuming you'll be able to take it.

Good luck with your surgery!

Please make sure you check with DR/nurse about your meds while at the hospital...I was very careful to tell ALL the medical people what I was on, the dosage, frequency, etc...I take metoprolol for high blood pressure, 50 mg twice a day...I took one pill that morning before surgery and I took all my medication with me to the hospital...that night I was not given my metoprolol and I asked for it...the nurse said that that the DR had not presrcibed it for while I was in the hospital...I said I need to take it and was on this med for 2 years before this and he is aware that I take it...she would not give it to me... and I said i have it in my purse, can I take it? she said no..so i did not take it...this was at about 8:00 PM at around 1:00 AM, my blood pressure shot up to 195/110, I was in so much pain and now my heart was racing and I felt terrible...they just kept recording my blood pressure numbers and made remarks and such and I told the nurses about my medication, but no one did anything...I had to wait until 9:00 am when the next DR came in so i could get her to prescribe it for my stay in the hospital...at 8:30 AM my blood pressure was 200/130 and the DR finally gave me my blood pressure meds...within 30 minutes my blood pressure went down to 120/75...please make sure your meds are accounted for and that there is a special order for you to receive them...a nurse cannot give any meds without a DR's order...I was scared to take them anyway, because I thought, well, maybe they know something I don't...they didn't...they just screwed up. I am sending happy thoughts your way! Knowledge is Power!!!!

Yes, take your meds with you. Especially the betaserone. I have a friend who takes this and you are right it is not readily available everywhere. The hospital checked mine in that am when I went and before I took them that day, checked to make sure that there would be no interference with any other meds used for surgery. And good advice earlier for you to take a week's worth just in case. Good luck and we'll see you on the other side of the boards.
