Concerns prior to scheduling hysterectomy

My gyn is strongly recommending a supracervical lap hysterectomy due to adenomyosis and fibroids. I trust the doctor completely, and my husband is all in favor of my getting it done as soon as possible. Like others, I am sick of enduring torturous periods month after month for days on end. But for some reason I can't fully commit to going ahead and scheduling the surgery. My doctor is leaving the decision up to me, pressuring me in no way.

My husband and I went through 12 years of every kind of fertility treatment known to man with no success. Our specialist finally agreed it was time to stop, nothing would work medically. 12 years wanting a child, and now 10 years later having made peace that's not going to happen. But, even though I've accepted the facts, I know the loss of my uterus will make this a finality. I guess in the back of mind there is always a niggling thought that maybe a miracle will happen and I'll get pregnant naturally.

Did anyone else have the feeling of extreme "loss" before deciding on hysterectomy, or during the wait for the surgery? I'm not fearful of the surgery in the least, or the recovery, just the emotions of the decision I guess.

Concerns prior to scheduling hysterectomy

Yes yes and yes! Like you, I always thought eventually my husband and I would miraculously become pregnant. I had a hysto last Wed Sept 3rd for the same reasons as you, adeno, endo, fibroids and hellacious periods. I was FAR more upset pre-surgery about losing my uterus. Now it's gone and I don't miss it a bit! I feel better one week post op than during my last period. Think about this, it's not just about you. If you're body isn't up to it, then it's not a very good place to hatch a baby! It's time to care enough for yourself to take care of your body. One last thought. My endocrinologist told me that if I wanted a baby after hysto (I kept my ovaries) we could use a surrogate. It was comforting to know there's always that one last option. But as I say, post op I'm happy and strong and ready to see what else life has to offer!

Concerns prior to scheduling hysterectomy

my hyst isn't scheduled yet, but every time I see my doctor we have the talk about it. he says we can do it whenever I'm ready, but I don't think I ever will be! I need to have it done because i've got adenomyosis with all it's symptoms, but I'm young (26) and it just feels so FINAL. my husband and I have decided not to have more biological children but the thought of losing my uterus, the thought that even if I wanted to get pregnant I couldn't terrifies me into dealing with the pain another week, another month...

so I understand what your feeling - I'm feeling that loss aleady, and I'm worried about feeling the loss afterwards as well. hopefully some more experienced women out there can help us out!
