Hysterectomy at 27
Hi. I have a lot of problems as far as periods and all that. I went in to the doctor and he said he would like to do a hysterectomy. I am scared and all around freaking out. I have 2 kids but I feel like if I get the hysterectomy I am giving up the one thing that I can do that my husband can not have children. Ever since I was a kid I was told it is my job to get married and have children and now it feels like my body is fighting me on this. Part of me is angery and sad. Is this normal?? Has anyone else had to have this done at a young age ( no offence to anyone) ? Any Advice I would be greatful for.

It's perfectly normal to be freaking out, it's a really big deal and if you are not ready, don't do it. You didn't mention what the medical issue is that is causing your problems, so if your doctor doesn't know, you need to find out. There are a lot of options to consider and try before commiting to a hysterectomy, that should be a last resort unless your life is at risk. As well, I'm sure there are tons of things that you can do that your husband can't ! We women are amazing creatures beyond giving birth--no one is born with a job, just options and choices, make sure you choose what's best for you.

I have Uterine fibriods, Cysts that happen anytime they feel like it, and the doc thinks that the endrometro cells have travaled into the out lining utrine muscle. My uterus is larger then it is supposed to be for my age. I have gotten to the point where my periods last for 2 weeks and are heavy the whole time. Just this month they started coming everyother week. With my periods being so heavy it is causing me to have bad deprestion and exahstion from my periods lasting so long and being so heavy.

Hi! I was told at 23 before I had children that my body was already shutting down and I should have the kids I wanted and then have surgery so I could have some quality of life to enjoy them. I had 4 children, some health problems and some great specialists. I am 45. I had everything removed 8/26. This time when my doc said I needed surgery, I was sick of being sick and I had used up my options. There are a lot of new things out there. Read the great info. on this site and get a second opinion. You need to be mentally and emotionally ready for a hysterectomy because it is irreversable. Whether you have surgery in 6 months or 20 more years, it is your body, so make sure you are educated about your condition and confident in your decision.

what is the medical reason your dr is suggesting you have a hysterectomy?
the best thing you can do is research all your options very carefully and make an informed decision. look into all of your options..including nonsurgical ones. its normal to have doubts and concerns.

Cinder, there are other treatments for fibroids, one you may want to look into is unterine fibroid artery embolization (UAE). What they do is a radiologist threads a catheter through the groin and into blood vessels going to the uterus. Tiny plugs block the blood supply, shriveling the fibroids.
The procedure reduces heavy bleeding, pain, and pressure about 90% of the time, women who get UAE have less pain on average a day after the procedure than those who undergo hysterectomy or myomectomy (a laparoscopic procedure), average a shorter stay in the hosp, and return to work quicker.
Turf wars between medical specialists and uneven insurance coverage are two big reasons it's not often mentioned by some doctors. Gynecological surgeons feel they're giving their business away to radiologists if they suggest UAE over hysterectomy.

Joebob-
Wow, I feel like I was reading my life! I was told shortly after my mariage at the age of 21 the same thing: my body was shutting down, I might never have kids, I cold lose the pregnancies easily, and someday my body would STOP and I couldn't ever have kids; and that I may already be past that point. I was told to try for children and then get a hysterectomy (I've got adenomyosis). Terrified, we tried for several years. We now have 2 kids and we're done. So at my last annual, my doctor and I talked again and he said we should schedule a hysterectomy. I'm not ready, so we're waiting. I'll admit that MOST of my symptoms are better post-children and with the Mirena IUD I have, but my biggest problem is severe pain during intercourse.
I'm torn between wanting to keep my uturus and wanting a normal, healthy love life with my husband. Even though we're done with our family, having a hyst is SO FINAL and I feel way too young (26). But my doctor said a hyst is really the only way to stop the painful intercourse. Wanting my love life back, part of me wants to have the hyst. But then I've heard that having a hyst will eliminate my sex drive completely, so isn't that a catch-22? I feel so lost, so stuck, like I've got no options... like no matter what I choose, I will lose. any help and advice?

I had my TAH BSO on 11/26/07 at the age of 30 (with two small boys). For me, it was the best decision I have ever made. This is like a birthday for me! I had endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, adhesions and was in misery 24/7 with the most horrible, crippling back pain in my life, not to mention the flooding, migraines, etc. I did alot of research but knew that is what was best for me (and my family). I feel so much better. Alot of people tried to stop me because I was "so young", but they didn't understand the pain I was in. I have not had any pain in almost a year! What a blessing! I had a wonderful doctor. He truly cared about how I felt and wanted me to be better. It can be a frightening process, surround yourself with people that care about you and will help you.

The decision to have a hysterectomy is a big one and it is not uncommon for women to sway back and forth about what to do! This is not just a little surgery, it is a major one that can affect us in so many different ways!
Before scheduling a hysterectomy it is a good idea to seek a second opinion no matter how great your own doctor is. An outside opinion may have additional knowledge, skills, experience, etc. that may open up other treatment options. A second opinion could confirm that what your doctor is telling you is exactly what you need to do so that you can be more confident with your decision.
You can also read through our Resource Database to find factual information about your conditions that could help you with your decision.
I had my hysterectomy when I was 25, thankfully after having my two boys. I did not have a happily ever after, this was the best decision I ever made. I had several surgical complications that caused a lengthy hospital stay and a very long recovery that affected my entire family. My health as never been the same. Actually, only this year, almost eight years later and another pelvic surgery later, am I started to be truly me again! So it is not lightly that I suggest you really weigh all of your pros and cons to determine what is best for you!
Take your time, seek additional medical opinions, do your research, and do what is best for you! S
