Why bruising in the vaginal area?

I'm day 4 of open abdominal surgery. I've gained 9 lbs of edema, incredible bruising 4" on both sides of horizontal 7" incision also scattered bruising farther up near ribs. Then I just noticed my whole vaginal area is black from bruising and there is hard flesh between incision and vaginal area. they did not do anything vaginally. So why the bruising there? also my incision which they used glued instead of staples is draining blood. the rn said I probably have hematoma, but not to worry. I'm an RN and this is the worst post-op bruising I've ever scene.

Why bruising in the vaginal area?

I'm so sorry for all your bruising.

At 4 days post op I was still oozing blood. The Dr. said it was blood from the surgery that had pooled there and was clotting, which is why she called it a blood clot. That is also why the staples didn't come out until later. Dr. wanted the blood to absorb back into the body instead of coming out the incision and possibly opening it up again. I was pretty purple, but not black. I would ask the Dr. about the black bruising below the incision.
I'm 10 days post op now and the purple is mostly gone. Now it just looks red and healing. I also don't have bruising up near the ribs although my back and hips hurt some. I have been using ice packs on the incision bruising and heating pad on the back and hips. I think you should speak to your Dr.

Let us know how things are going.
