Cyst on my only ovary

I am almost 5 years post hysterectomy. I was able to keep on ovary. It has caused pain and problems the whole time! Now I found out I have a huge cyst on it and it has to come out. I am worried about having to take synthetic hormones and I am worried I will suffer sleepless nights again as I did after my hysterectomy. Has anyone else had to go back and have an ovary removed post-hysterectomy? What can I expect post op this time around? I really dread the sweats!!

Cyst on my only ovary

Hi piggykeeper!

I don't know for certain the nature of your user-name, but my neighbors have a pot-bellied pig and it is so adorable I can hardly stand it! :snort:

If you have your remaining ovary removed, you will go into surgical menopause. There is a wide variety of reaction to this among patients. For me, life would not have been worth living without hormones to replace those my ovaries used to make. For others, having "zero hormones" produced seems to make little, if any, difference at all in how they feel and function.

My best advice is to let your medical provider know what you experience after your last ovary is removed. Help is available, so there is no need for you to have to suffer.

Many s and Best Wishes,

Cyst on my only ovary

We recently adopted two guinea pigs to our house, that's where the name stems from

I am worried about hormones, I don't do well with them. I could not take any form of birth control before my hysterectomy so I do hope that I will be one of the ones that are not effected by ovary removal, I guess only time will tell.

Cyst on my only ovary

Love guinea pigs! So smart for what they are! I had a cyst removed and partial tube. I don't know the hormone part but this surgery was ab cut and the recovery should have been the same...same cut and all but it was WAY easier. I was up and walking at 12 hours...hyster was 2 days and they had to make me. the pain was way, way better. I think having the uterus removed is the painful part....don't know for sure, but for me it was. Good luck on hormone thing...sorry I don't know about that YET....having ovary issues too so I may know soon enough LOL take care!

How long was recovery?

JTWILLIAM -
How long was your recovery. I only have half of my right ovary left and a month after my hyst..I started having pain. I have been dealing with this cyst since March. It took me about 8 weeks recovery after the hyst - done abdominal. The doc said this will also need to be done abdominal. Really don't want to go through it all again. Am I am also nervous about hormone replacement and weight gain.

Cyst on my only ovary

With the cystectomy, I was out of work 7 weeks but I probably could have gone back earlier. The recovery was just so much easier. Sometimes it seemed like a bad flash-back or something surreal because I was only 9 mos. from hyster and really it didn't hurt that much. Anyway, I started having pain (in the ovary area) 2 weeks out of surgery. I knew it was something and not recovery. I have constant daily pain since then...Feb 27 was surgery. But if you want to count the pain I had with the cyst that was removed..daily pain since last Aug. That cyst was in the tube and more centered in my abdomin. You will be okay.... just be up front with your dr. re: HRTs and if you want to go that route. Weight gain, I think that can be helped with excerise... wow, I miss walking (still restricted from excerise) but really to be pain-free, if you gain a little weight, that will be okay. There is more to life than body size.
