Is a hysterectomy in my future?

So I'm a new girl, searching for answers and advice that I can't seem to get from my doctor.

Today I found out that the results from my LEEP last month were CIN-III, as opposed to the CIN-II that my colposcopy and punch-biopsy had found. In addition, the margins were not clear so the doctor doesn't know if he got everything or not. His plan is to wait until December for another pap to see the results....then "touch-up" if needed. I assume that means another LEEP?

I'm curious if anyone else has gone through a similar situation and what your experience was - did you eventually end up needing a hysterectomy?

Is a hysterectomy in my future?

Hi VA2GA,

and I'm very glad you've found us. I'd like to invite you to post in the Cancer Concerns Forum http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/for...daysprune=&f=6 where there are other ladies who have/had your DX. I'm sure they will be very willing to share their experiences with you.

If you are not seeing a gyn/onc you may want to consider doing this as they are very well experienced dealing with precancers etc. I hope to see you in CC.

to Hystersisters!

Sorry to hear that your LEEP did not show clear margins. How frustrating! The good thing about the LEEP, though, is that not only does it remove abnormal cells, but it will destroy a certain depth of cells beyond the line where the cutting took place. So hopefully, your doc got very close to the edge of the area with the abnormal cells and any remaining cells were destroyed. It will be very important for you to have regular PAP's for a couple of years. Many docs recommend a PAP every 3 months for 2 years. That would give plenty of time for any abnormal cells to surface and be able to be detected with a PAP. If all of your PAP's are normal, you can likely return to an annual PAP.

If, for some reason, your PAP does come back abnormal, you could have your LEEP repeated. Some women do end up with hysterectomies due to ongoing problems, but most women end up cured with just a LEEP or cone.

Good luck! Let us know how you are doing!
