Fibroglandular densities....what is this?

Hi Ladies. I had my mammogram last week and I got a call today from them saying I needed to come back for a repeat mammogram and ultrasound that the mammogram had shown fibroglandular densities in my left breast. What exactly does this mean? This is only my 2nd mammogram. First one was 5 years ago and normal. Thanks. For what it's worth, my left breast is larger than my right and I am using HRT and have been for over 2 years now.

Fibroglandular densities....what is this?

Hi my name is Linda ive only found this site recently and im glad i did plenty of info.

I think this is found in every woman before menopause but is gradually replaced with fatty tissue during the change.Fibroglandular densities show up white in a mammogram and so does cancer so this can make it hard for radiologist to detect if cancer is present .This can be the same case with calcifications which tend to show up in mammograms which tend to be benign. In regards to breast sizes i think most of us see a difference in breast size and shape during the menopause.

I dont think you should worry as the radiologist would have noticed if anything looked unusual about breast appearance etc...

All the best anna

Fibroglandular densities....what is this?

i agree....i get this reading all the time and expect the additional views....mine are "dense" so it's harder to see what's normal fatty tissue and what's suspicious so they need better shots....hang in there.....my dr. now orders a diagnostic mammo every year because of this...i'm 39 and have had 2 biopsies because of fibrocystic disease---better safe than sorry!
