prometrium/interactions

Hi Sisters,

I just got my prescription for Prometrium. It comes with lots of information regarding side effects and interactions which I was not expecting. Since our bodies made progesterone before our surgeries, I thought it would be like taking a supplement or vitamin or something.

I am a worry-wart. What can you tell me about this? I like to have a cocktail (or maybe 2) every couple of weeks at a restaurant. Should I quit this? Also, I have prescription headache meds. But maybe I won't be getting headaches!

What has been your experience. As usual, thanks so much!

prometrium/interactions

Hi there
I can understand your concern. The important thing to remember is that the side effects listed are indications that you have an improper dose. Also ALL hormones are affected by what you eat, drink or smoke, whether they are made in your body or taken in a pill/patch or cream. Because prometrium is taken orally there might be some things you should not take it with. If you do not like this approach you could always use the cream and totally avoid the digestive tract.
Best wishes and let us know if you have more questions.

prometrium/interactions

Withhope, I am not sure if it is an interaction with the progesterone or just an interaction with hormones period but it does have an interaction. I have only drank one time since I have been on hormones and it sent me for a loop. My hormones were a mess for sometime afterwards. One of the other hostesses (Kim) has said that she starts hotflashing when she drinks. She was gracious enough to do an experiment for us and drink at a nice dinner her hubby took her too. She is such a jungle trooper From what I have been able to see from other ladies, it seems to get better as time goes on. I just havent checked it out. Scared to death too.

Withhope,
Jungle trooper here reporting for duty. I use the progesterone cream and not prometrium. You may want to check with your doctor for interactions with alcohol.

Smoking, diet, alcohol can all affect our hormonal balance. What I found my first year or more post op is that alcoholic beverages would definetly induce hot flashes. And I did an experiment for the ladies here and found that it usually took me about 15 minutes after starting a drink and I would flash for about 2-3 minutes. They would continue on and off throughout the night. I have found that over time the flashes have stopped.

Same here...I will be 2yrs post op in Oct and during the first few months I had a beer and it was awful. I am not much of a drinker but now I can have a drink and I react the way I did before my hyst...not sure what the deal is but it does seem to get better with time.

Some women experience drowsiness with the oral progesterone so be sure to watch for that. You don't want to be driving down the road feeling sleepy!

I think I read that alcohol causes the estrogens levels to rise substantially for several hours after a drink. The experts seem to think that's the reason excessive alcohol may be a risk of breast cancer.
