Doctor changed type of surgery at last minute

Hi,
I'm due to have my hysterctomy on 11/11/08 and was told all along that I would be having a TAH BSO. Then when I went to my preop appointment, he said he may do it laproscopically. This made my husband happy, but me nervous about the last minute change. Has anybody had this happen to them, and how do you think I should handle it?
I would like to tell the doctor not to change the surgery type, but my husband wants me not to say anything. Help.
Thanks,
Melinda

Hi Melinda

I would have been thrilled if I could have had a less invasive surgery but it was not to be :-(

However if I had of been given the option I would want to know why he has decided to do it this way now and how many of these surgeries has he done in the past (nobody wants to be a guinea pig)

Wishing you all the best for a safe surgery & an uneventful recovery

Katy

He had just come back from a conference and was really busy with patients, so he didn't even have my chart with him or even know what my surgery date was. I had to tell him.
Being a guinea pig is my worry too and I won't see him until my surgery so I can't even ask those questions.

I'm the opposite! Ive got some vague symptoms that aren't quite explained by the prolapse, so he may do some laprascopic work, and he can't guarantee that he won't be doing a larger incision. But he's pretty sure he won't have to do anything worse than a bikini cut! Maybe! Yikes! So I can totally understand the feeling of, hey, can't we be a little more sure of ourselves before we start playing with sharp instruments around my insides?

It doesn't help that I've had adominal surgery done back in 1964 and have been told that my right side of my body is full of adhesions. I would like to have some of those removed while he's in there and he had agreed to do so. Now I'm not sure what he plans on doing.
I'm diabetic, but have kept my blood suger level averages below 120, but am still concerned about the longer surgery time if he does do it laproscopically too.
Just what I need, more stress before I go into the hospital. lol
