does everyone get a 'sling'?

I'm having a hysterectomy on Wednesday. Will I get a sling, too? And if not, do I ask for one? What is it for? Why is it needed?

I didn't get a sling. I believe it is to help support the bladder when necessary. I didn't have bladder issues so I didn't need to have a sling.
If you are having problems, do mention them to your dr.

does everyone get a 'sling'?

Hi I had a different type of bladder surgery with my TAH/BSO, its called a Burch procedure (BP) SOME HOW they stitch up the bladder neck to the pelvic wall no mesh involved. I read so many good things bout it but now, I have to wonder. I have had issues since surgery. I think for me, my bladder problems started with my peri menopause and uterus getting SO BIG and pressing on my bladder also my hormones being so off, this can affect the bladder I have read now... but I went for the BP since I was under the knife anyway.
SO I wonder if the bladder does sag in the long run anyway if you remove the uttie? Its such a hard call, everyone is different, and how bad is your bladder issues? Take all this into account. GOOD LUCK

I"m getting a bladder sling (don't know the exact name of the procedure) with my TAHBSO. A urologist is doing mine, but some of my friends had theirs done by the GYN.

I'm getting it because I pee on myself when I cough/sneeze etc., and I figured while they were in the vicinity, they might as well fix it!

Talk to your Dr. to see if you need one!

Not everyone needs one. Just ask your doctor if you will need it.

I had a bladder sling but only because I had a bad prolapse of the anterior wall (cystocele) I think it's only done when the bladder has fallen in a heap like it had with me and I had real problems with bladder urgency.

I hope you don't have any of these additional problems and yours will be a hysterectomy only! I'm sure your doctor would have said something to you if you needed the bladder sling too. Best of luck to you!!

I asked my doctor about getting a sling, and she had me go get a urodynamics study (not fun!). It turns out that my kind of bladder issues aren't treatable by surgery, so I won't be getting a sling after all. Instead, I'll be having pelvic physical therapy. (I have no idea what this will entail, and I'm not sure I want to.)

does everyone get a 'sling'?

My gynie was doing a physical exam and had one hand on top of my belly the other up inside and he starts wiggling that hand left to right like crazy and asked if i had bladder problems! Oh yeah. Since the birth of my dd who was large ,I became become completely incontinent during a chest cold and leaking at other times. No control. BIG WHOOSH. He said my bladder neck was extremely loose and this was the time to take care of it with the mesh. Perfect time while they are there and many women who don't get it done will be back in a few years to get it done anyway I am told. So here's hoping I'll have no problems. He has only had 1 patient with mesh erosion-ever. So crossing my fingers I'll be A-OK.
