UTI and Interstitial Cystitis
Hi I've been diabetic for three years. I am now 40. It runs in my family strongly. I am type 2 .I have also been chronically ill for a very long time with a bone infection in my skull. I do not know how long possibly 10-30 years I have had this infection, spent alot of time on IV antibioitics... 2 rounds, three months each. It was very hard to get a diagnosis bc bone infections are hard to diagnose..actually since we found that out my endocrinologist has thought that maybe my infection and the inactiivity, and pain etc it caused started the onset of my diabetes. Though I was already at risk with a family history, steriod use (for the pain) and being overweight
Anyway. last month 4 weeks ago, I had an emergency hysterectomy.. botched endometrial biopsy left me bleeding and foreign object or injury to the endometrial canal... so we've really been through it these last few months... (and years)
I have one child and a very supportive husband who is also at the end of his rope.
I have never had any problem really with the diabetes, other than taking my glumetza, which I do when I remember... I admit I am not that good... however my A1C's come back under 6. consistently. She said I need it though because I don't rebound to a normal blood sugar quickly enough after eating. Also, I have been vomitting and not eating for the whole month.
After the hysterectomy of course they foley catherterized me over nite. I had been having UTI symptoms since early September (now it is December so three months).....I've just been taking pyridium that orange stuff that makes the UTI symptoms go away because I kept prior to September testing negative for UTI (this is called intersitial cystitis and I have bouts of it). I am guessing that the infection at latest started with the catheterization... for the surgery - so I month. I also for 20 years have had blood in my urine,,,,trace to which they acribed to a "leaky kidney"
Yesterday, I finally got in with the urologist.. and she said I had a really bad infection and that my kidneys were outputting protein, she said it wasn't just a trace but more than a moderate amount....
what does this mean? and Is it related to my diabetes? I've been through a lot and not really been stressed about much even though I have a lot of chronic things, but this is scaring me.
Comments?

UTI and Interstitial Cystitis
Also, I am 4 weeks post op yesterday...
My belly is still very sore. I fit into my jeans but can't wear them because the button pushes on my sore spots......I am still very sore fromm bottom to belly button, and I'll bet having this UTI all month long isn't helping me heal.... plus I am diabetic.... but the area still feels very bruised.
Oh yes, I still can't eat meat, even the smell makes me sick. so I eat PBJ and chx soup.....
Even so I vomitted up my PBJ tonite...I keep vomitting. See also my post on the UTI... I just posted. I thought it was too many issues for one post.
My poor hubby, I am going to try to prepare him a meal tomorrow.... if I can stand the smell.
my post op appt is in 5 days.

I'm so sorry you're struggling right now ~ you've alot going on.
A hysterectomy is major surgery and diabetes certainly can complicate things and become out of control itself, too. It's not unusual to experience urinary tract infections with diabetes (due to glucose in the bladder, which bacteria just loves) and, unfortunately, urinary tract infections are very common following a hysterectomy, also. Protein is a common finding with UTIs but you'll need to ask your doctor regarding the significance of the amount.
It's quite possible that your recovery will take longer due to the diabetes but it's still relatively early days. I wish you well for your appointment ~ will you let us know how you get on? Please don't hesitate to contact your doctor, or bring the appointment forward, should things deteriorate any further.
Sending all good wishes as you continue to heal.

Thanks Poodle, Isn't the internet wonderful. I belong to a diabetes support group and a couple of religious/philosophical websites. I've made friends all over the world!
My official post op appointment is Tuesday...4 days from now, so we'll see what she says. The incision looks great but my insides are so sore and I know I have wrenched myself several times and had two bad falls.....I did have a sono yesterday of the bladder and kidneys...I can't make heads or tails of them, though I can read a skull CT like a pro!
Another fact is I have a double kidney on the right, so I don't know maybe she didn't realize that and cut one of the ureters that were extra?
Thanks for your kind reply.

OH NO!! You have been through so much!!! I am sorry!! I wanted to say be strong and I wish I had some answers, I feel I have IC as well so that is why I read this post. BUT you have been through a lot, I didnt have any answers but wanted to say BEST WISHES!! I also found eating low acid foods and taking Prelief with each meal helped me a lot, you can find it online its made by the same people that make BEANO, Prelief takes the acid out of the FOOD you are eating at the time, it has NO bearing on your stomach acid, pretty neat huh? GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!
