Help! Borderline Ovarian Tumor diagnosis

Lots of anxiety here! I am recovering nicely from my Laproscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy and Left Oopherectomy on 11/26/08 (two weeks ago). I had my left ovary, uterus and right falliopan tube removed. My cervix and right ovary remain. The pathology report just came back that the tumor they removed attached to my left ovary is Borderline Ovarian Tumor. Now, I have to have ANOTHER surgery in a month or so for staging. The will remove my right ovary and sample omentum, and some lymph nodes. A gyn oncologist will perfrom this surgery and they hope to do it laprocsocpically so I can heal fast again. If those pathology results come back ok, then no chemo. Just close following for 2 years. I am nervous about having another surgery so soon. Has anyone had an experience like this? I feel pretty educated from reading throughout this site, but would appreciate any words of wisdom. Thanks!

Help! Borderline Ovarian Tumor diagnosis

Hi Tracy,

It sounds like you are getting great care. It is a bummer to have to have another surgery so close to your last but it is better safe than sorry. A gyn/onc did my tumor removal so I was staged in the same surgery. I hope all goes well and am sure it will. Borderlines have an excellent prognosis but you still need close follow-up. Best of luck to you and keep us posted!

Hi Tracy

My hysterectomy was one week ago today. My pathology report came back stating they found a borderline tumor in my right ovary. I have an appointment next week with an oncologist to find out my options. I know you must be experiencing anxiety and I am too.
I wish I could reassure you, but I have not had any experience with two surgeries in that amount of time.
There is a lot of information on borderline ovarian tumors out there; I have researched as much as I can since my pathology report and I am ready with questions for the oncologist so I will have some control on my situation.
I'm glad to hear you are recovering nicely!

Sadly, there are times that cancer is found following surgery and a second surgery is needed. This second surgery will determine staging as you already know. In the long run, it is better to have this second surgery now and know where things stand than to not have it and not be so sure. It is a bummer to have to go through this though.

We have had members here who have had to have the second surgery. Write down all the questions you have so you can be ready for the consult with the gyn/onc.
