Was not prepared for the worse...

Hello everyone...

I thought that I had prepared myself for my surgery...i read, researched, talked to the kids, etc. There is no way that I could have been prepared for all this. I posted my story in Hyster Sisters Forums > Hyster Sisters Extras For Fun > Princesses Tell Their Hyst-Stories..if anyone is interested..but I won't go through it all again here. But here's the continuation.....

My surgery was 8/7...I came home 8/10...and was readmitted 8/16. There were blood clots in my incision...so the Dr had to open it back up! I now have an open incision..about 6 inches long...and about 1/2 inch deep. We're having a home health care worker come in to help change the dressings right now...but we're expected (dh and myself) to do it ourselves soon. The whole thing scares me. Has anyone else had any of this happen...that can tell me it will all be ok?

HANG IN THERE

Hi Lynn

I had my TAH on 8/2; without the complications you have had. But, in my profession, (medical practice administrator) we have had several women go through this. It will be a longer recovery, but you will be great! Just hang in there. After one of my c-sections (of which I had four), I went through something similar.

Was not prepared for the worse...

Oh yes! I had to go back into the hospital because I had cellulitis and a sermoa developed under the incision. I didn't know this. I just knew I was very swollen and it was hot. I went to the ER and the doc said I just needed a bm and gave me a stool softener. 2 days later I got up to let the dog out and the incision burst open. There was so much blood I thought I was bleeding to death. I was alone (hubby in Korea) and the hospital was 45 minutes away. I called the ER there and they said to call 911. When I got there, they had to clean out the ruptured incision with something that burned like crazy (I was in too much pain to care what t was) and cotton tipped swabs. They had to open the incision and inch more on each side to make sure all the infection was out. Then the packing started. I spent 4 more days in the hospital with nurses constantly packing and unpacking th wound. Then I had t do it myself for a few days after I got out.

This was 3 years ago. I lived through it... alone no less. You'll be ok. Once you are expected to pack it on your own it doesn't hurt as bad. I suggest YOU do it and not hubby. You know how much pressure you can take.

Let me know how you are doing, please!
