Ovaries and Migraines

I'm going to be scheduled for tvh and sling on the 29th of this month. Gyno and uro have to coincide schedules and i see uro on 29th. My doctor is planning to leave both ovaries. I've asked this question before and haven't gotten much response ............so here goes again.

Does removal of ovaries help with migraine headaches(hormonal)? Always have BAD migraines for the first 3 days of my period. They started when I got aunt flo at age 11, i'm 40 now so been long time sufferer. I do take maxalt and this helps, but i don't want to have to take it for the rest of my life. I have read the past posts but I just haven't been able to pinpoint the correct answer. I plan on asking my gyn but want to be well informed before i do so.

I will not be having another pre-op appnt before surgery so I'll have to schedule a phone consult with dr within a few days. My gyno is 3 hours away so he says I just need to show up for surgery. I already have before surgery prep info. Just forgot to ask about ovaries and migraines at my last appt.

Do I need to insist on BSO? Or maybe just ask about leaving only one ovary? PLEASE HELP........need all the input i can get. Need answers asap, I have to schedule phone consult as soon as I can (sounds crazy to me that I have to "schedule" a phone consult). Which is worse? sudden menopause or migraine? Would like to have input from both sides of issue.

Sorry this is so long. I know I'm rambling but i really need some input. BTW this site has been a godsend for me. So glad I found this special place for special systers.

Ovaries and Migraines

Plenty of threads here recently about this. For me and a lot of others, yes, cessation of migraines after ovary removal. That is depending on whether yours are in fact hormonal.
Plus I guess after that the success of ERT or not in the individual.
In short, hormonally induced migraines won't improve after hyster unless ovaries are removed in the majority of cases.
There is no resaon why they would. Whereas it is logical that they may be improved by ovary removal. Please talk with your Doctor again, every Doctor is different and therefore has subjective views re ovary removal.

Ovaries and Migraines

Just in the last 3 years I have started get get hormonal headaches.. they are awful, and start usually the day or so before my period and continue for a few days - nothing makes the go away. I am 47.. and researched a bit on this.. and have decided that my ovaries are worth keeping! The good they provide is worth the headaches. That said, I am trying something new - and can't tell you yet if it works.. natural progesterone cream. Others swear by it.. and I am hopeful!

Ovaries and Migraines

Ok..this has been my experince with migranes and hormones...I always got migranes about 3 times a month before I had the hyst. Then when I was on Lupron I didn't get any it was great!!! After hyst, I have one ovary left..I started getting migranes again!!! So now I take enjuvia a couple of times a month when I feel like I'm going to "cycle" and that has been effective at keeping my migranes away! Good Luck!

Ovaries and Migraines

You've definitely given me something to think about for myself. I too suffer severe migraines starting about 7 days before the onset of my period. I however am allergic to migraine meds that are triptans (maxalt, imitrex, zomig etc.) and can only rely on heavy doses of advil/motrin. I do also get migraines that are stress related but most are hormonal. My dr is planning on leaving the ovaries but I think it's worth asking him if he thinks it'll help the migraines. Not sure however is being thrown into menopause is worth it. I'd have to seriously think about it. I suppose if I were guaranteed no more migraines I'd do it but there are no guarantees. Either way you'd be taking drugs though...migraine drugs vs HRT. Which is the lesser of the two evils?

Good luck!

Ovaries and Migraines

I used to get migraines like you before my period and during. I had LAVH and they left me with 1 ovary. They took cervix, uterus, everything but right ovary. I can tell you that since then I have had no migraines. I know for me since I don't get my period, I don't have any of those issues I did before. I think its best to talk to your dr because they know whats best but like I said for me they have not come back. I am not on any hormone therapy either. Love Beth
