How long does it take for menopause symptoms to set in?

Hi everyone...I was just wondering how long after having hyst including removal of ovaries does it take for the menopause type symptoms to appear (e.g. hot flashes). The reason why I ask is because it's been just over a month for me and so far I have noticed very little difference except for some vaginal dryness (which sucks but whatever I can deal lol) and I'm wondering am I in the clear...or are the hot flashes just around the corner? I meant to ask my Dr. but totally forgot!

Thanks

oh and one other thing since I am posting...what do people mean when they write dancing with NED...what does NED stand for?

NED means "No Evidence of Disease."

I know the answer to that question, but don't know about the menopausal question, since I am 53 and already was going through menopause. It's funny. My menopausal symptoms were much worse before my ovaries were removed 5 days ago.

I hope someone can answer your question about menopausal symptoms, but "dancing with NED" to me means they were dealing with cancer issues, and now have "no evidence of disesase."

How long does it take for menopause symptoms to set in?

Menopausal symptoms can start hours, days, weeks, months after the surgery. It all depends on how many residual hormones are in your body, those with a little extra weight have more stored hormones so it could take longer. If you search for posts related to when do menopausal symptoms start you'll find people who had them in the recovery room to those that didn't have them for months until after surgery. For me surgery was on a Monday and it hit full bore on Saturday. I had 3 days of headaches, really bad hot flashes and night sweats. The headaches I believe were basically from my body going cold turkey on hormones (I hadn't been menopausal before the surgery). Hot flashes went to simmers and now have cranked up a bit to flushes, especially if I'm stressed. The night sweats and healing from the surgery brought on insomnia which luckily if I take a small dose of Xanax before bedtime seems to be controlled. So all I can say is you'll know when it shows up and I wish you luck that it's awhile.
