How long does it take for HRT to work?

Hi everyone. Due to hot flashes and night sweats, I have recently been prescribed with a low dose estrogen patch (Estraderm .025mg). I started using this 5 days ago and am wondering how long does it generally take to work. As yet, I haven't had any improvement in my symptoms but perhaps it's still early days yet? Thanks.

How long does it take for HRT to work?

Hi Carolyn!

Yes, you're in the early days. It does take time for any hormone therapy to reach optimum levels and how long it takes to reach them isn't the same for everyone. It's not good to make too many changes too quickly as it can make finding balance harder than it has to be. That said, the 0.025 dose you're on is the lowest and probably isn't going to be enough to work for someone in surgical menopause.

If you don't see improvement soon let your doctor know. Perhaps a higher dose (usually 0.05 or higher for those of us in surgical menopause) would be more effective. It's a trial and error process and there's nothing wrong with starting low and going higher in dose.

How long does it take for HRT to work?

My doctor started me with the highest dosage patch--I had really "crashed and burned" hormonally from my LAVH a few weeks earlier, and he knew he needed to get a lot of estrogen in me quickly. I started feeling better within a few days.
