Has anyone had surgery for vaginal prolapse?

It is now 9 months since my op. I had a prolapsed cervix so opted for a partial hysterectomy- ovaries remain. However, I have had an ongoing problem with vaginal infections since and seem to be on antibiotics every few weeks. In addition, my specialist has informed me that I now have vaginal descent because of weak ligament support. I have been advised to undergo further surgery to correct the problem as it is causing major discomfort. Has anyone gone through a similar situation? Help!

Has anyone had surgery for vaginal prolapse?

Hi; Sorry you're having these problems!

Has your doctor recommended you try a pessary? It isn't a permanent solution but can perhaps buy you some time while you research your options. A specialist asked me to consider giving it a try to do the same, and to also see if putting the vagina back up where it belongs might give me an idea of how much the prolapse affects my quality of life. Although I've decided another surgery is in my future, I'm going to try the pessary next week.

I've had 2 surgeries for prolapsed vagina. The 1st surgery (done vaginally) was to correct prolapse due to the uterus, bladder and rectum prolapsing onto the vagina (very rough childbirth in 1997, but got a beautiful baby!); that was technically a partial hysterectomy and anterior/posterior repairs. The second surgery (done through a large abdominal incision) was to repair an enterocele, where the peritoneum gets a hole, allowing intestine to loop down into the pelvic cavity, causing the vagina to prolapse. I now have another enterocele causing the same problem and am planning to have it repaired surgically.
I, too, had a bacterial vaginal infection a few months after the hysterectomy, but it was remedied with a course of antibiotic. I had not had such an infection until then. Doctor couldn't tell me the reason for it.

What, may I ask, did your doctor say is exactly causing the prolapse? Is it just collapsing down on itself? Or is the bladder or rectum to blame, also?
It occurs to me, as I write this, that I could be scaring you! But don't fear; the reason with the multiple surgeries, in my case, has been due to me having inherited very weak tissues. Doctors say this is not the norm for very many women.
I just finished writing a little shpeel on what I've gone through, thus far, in this forum (abdominal sacral colpopexy:antiquated!). The main point I wanted to get across to other gals is to strongly consider a specialist in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. I think if you'd look under that description, online, you may find a specialist in your area. You could also look under urogynecology/pelvic reconstructive surgery. If you could have an option of having your repairs done by laparascope or robot assisted, or vaginally, strongly consider it.
My surgeries were done by my gynecologist with one of her colleagues assisting her in the second.
The second surgery, done through an abdominal incision about 8", was to "tack up" the vagina to the sacrum; I must say, it was an awful bugger to recover from! I wouldn't do it again, if given the option. I could've traveled to a neighbor-state and had it done vaginally or laparascopically; I wish I had done so.
Having found a doctor who specializes ONLY in female pelvic medicine has been very, very helpful to me. Perhaps you can find one in your area? I hope so. If I had seen a specialist earlier on, some of what I'm dealing with now may have been avoided, I think.

Best wishes to you in finding a solution!

Wendy
