period started

Hi, I am new to this and I am scheduled to have my vaginal hysterectomy on Friday morning. However, I started my period yesterday. Does my surgery need to be cancelled because of this? May sound like a dumb question, but I just don't know and I called my dr's office so I could ask her nurse, but they are closed today. Also, I am suppose to douche tomorrow in preparation for the surgery. I just don't know what to do. Help.

Don't worry, a lot of us were on our periods when we went in, they just had me sit on a little pad when I was prepped for surgery and said it was no big deal. You might want to call the Dr. tomorrow and ask about the douche while your on, I can't see that stopping your surgery though, my period was never ending so if we waited for mine to stop I might have waited forever. I wish you well!

You should be fine! Many of us head off to OR while bleeding, especially those of us who have been bleeding and bleeding with no end in site!

I would suggest double checking with your doctor's office in the morning to be 100%. There have been a few ladies on the site who have had doctors who did not want to do their surgeries during their period. However, those ladies were aware of that stipulation when they were scheduling their surgery. In general, it is not a problem at all!

Best wishes for your surgery! I hope all goes well and you have a smooth recovery!

I would say it's no problem. Have seen that happen on here a lot. But if you are to douche, I would definitely call the doc's office and confirm. When you have your period, your cervix is open slightly. When I had toxic shock( a whole different situation, obviously) they said the blood being expelled had gone back up into the cervix and then into the uterus and that is what is so dangerous. So I know that things can get up into areas they are not supposed to when you're bleeding. But anyway, call the doc's office.

I was bleeding like a sieve when I was put to sleep and when I woke up, I was not.

If your preop instructions did not include douching, then don't. My GYN recommends never douching for any reason. Like ReliefSeeker mentioned, it can cause a lot of problems with infection.

Thank you all for your kind words and advice. I feel much better and I will still keep trying to reach my dr. to ask her about the douching while on my period.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm on day 16 of my period and am scheduled for surgery next Tuesday. I fully expect to still be bleeding. Oddly, I'm almost looking forward to being able to know the exact hour my bleeding will stop forever!
