3 Week Wall

I read so much about the 3 week wall but don't have the faintest idea what it is, but I am assuming it must be a bad thing since it is mentioned so much. I will be 3 weeks next Monday and would like to know what I need to prepare for. I really hope it does not mean more pain as I have had plenty of that already! Any infor you can provide will be helpful!

3 Week Wall

Hi Dawn,

First off, not everyone will hit this "wall". It also doesn't necessarily occur at exactly 3 weeks.

What it refers to is that around 3-5 weeks post-op, the countless stitches in your abdomen will start dissolving, leaving weakened tissues to take over. In the meantime, anesthesia has been leaving your body. Many women start to "feel" their surgery more around this time, and wonder why. Pangs and pulling, tugging sensations can occur. Because the stitches are dissolving, it is really a normal phase of recovery, but a more "fragile" one.

I wouldn't worry too much. If you have been taking it VERY easy, you will get throught it just fine. Avoid activities that involve lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and prolonged sitting. It's one thing to stand at a kitchen counter and wash a couple of dishes, but avoid all but the lightest housework for now. Moderate walking will continue to be good for you, but listen to your body, and take care not to overdo it.

My very best to you...

Linda
