3 weeks post-op and having bladder issues

Jan. 30th I had a TVH(kept ovaries), Sling operation with Cystocele Repair and Rectocele Repair. I am having problems with the Sling Operation part of the surgery. I am still using a catheter to urinate and my doctor just says to give it time. Of course, I am worried, and I am willing to give it time, but how much time? Has anyone else had a similiar surgery? I am second guessing myself that if I just jumped into this.

wagmez--

I am sorry you are having to deal with this for so long. I did have to come home and self-cath from my original surgery in '05 but it was only for a day and a half.

Has your doctor given you any kind of time limit? 3 weeks sounds like quite a long time to me, too. Has s/he mentioned anything about the sling part of the operation to you? Sometimes, it is the swelling that is the main problem in the early weeks of recovery. I do know that the first 6 weeks are the toughest and the most likely for swelling to be the issue.

You can check for others who have had catheters by using the Google Search at the top right of the page here in the blue rectangle. Just type it in and you will get a list of posts on the topic.

I hope you can find the hope and help you need. Sending you extra ........

I have had your exact problems, I could not empty at all, then I could some, and now completely. It did take time and at around 3 wks is when it started to really get better. I believe it was swelling that kept everything from coming out. I still have hesitancy problems but I'm hoping that improves as well.

I think your cystocele repair has sent your bladder into shock and it needs more time to recover. While I didn't like self cathing, it was preferrable to the foley 100x's over.

I do know your suffering, hang in there!

Has your doctor prescribed Bethanachol and Urelle? These were lifesavers for me, but they don't work overnight - I had to take them for 1 week before I was able to aleviate the pain and had a normal urinary stream. I also had a UTI that was undetected by the office urinary test - the culture came back 3 days later and indicated a severe UTI. Please be sure you have a urine culture conducted!
