Supracervical Hysterectomy???

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between a LAVH and a supracervical hyst?? I am scheduled for a LAVH on Sept 6 but curious about the other to see if it could be an option.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Karen

Supracervical Hysterectomy???

Hi Karen

As always, your best approach is to ask your doctor exactly what your surgery consists of. You can also do a "search" on LAVH and you will most likely find a description of what it stands for. You can also visit these sites, where you might find your surgery described:

http://www.yoursurgery.com/index.cfm
http://pelvicfloor.com/library/
http://www.wdxcyber.com/mhyst.htm
http://thomasllyons.com/publications/supra.htm
http://www.wchm.org.au/hyster.htm
http://www.womhealth.org.au/WHQWlea...ysterectomy.htm
http://www.obgyn.net/image_library/.../gyn_images.htm

**** Warning: Some of these sites have very graphic photos, that some may find disturbing ****

To answer your question, the difference between a LSH and LAVH is that a LSH is done entirely laparascopically whereas a LAVH is Lap assisted vaginal hyst.

Hope this helps and you can find the answers your looking for.

I am 10 days post from a supra cervical

It was the best thing I ever did. I have NO PAIN with the exception of the horrific gas I got from eating a piece of pizza 6 days after, it was the worst mistake of my life.

I had a total hysterectomy with two LARGE fibroids, one of them pressed up on my bladder so badly that it hindered normal urine expulsion, The largest fibroid had begun to decay inside while the outside fed itself on my estrogen that was barely made by my ovaries with several cysts on each and were so undersized that the decision was to take out the whole package.

When I woke up in recovery I had a bit of soreness and a couple nights into things my back hurt from laying down, no one told me I was supposed to roll over on my side.. now that was not pain free but it did make things better and once I got settled in on my side it wasnt so bad.
I couldnt lay on my left side because that was where most of the largest fibroid had lived and the removal was not a simple thing for my DR ( in fact he was in surgery 4 1/2 hours with me and my DH said that the doc looked drained and was beyond exhausted) I was able to lay on my left after about 5 days though.

The only real pain besides the gas, has been some kind of nerve ending twinges I felt inside where everything used to be.
I even traveled over 500 miles to have a doctor perform it on me because I own a service business and cannot afford the luxury of laying around for 6-8 weeks. even with the complication of an infection that settled on me right after the pizza incident, I feel like I will be able to work lightly at first by the middle of next week.
One piece of advice about traveling though... If my hubby had not used one of those inflatable matresses that you get at walmart, my ride home would have been unbearable. It made things so much better also about four pillows were used, two for my head and one for each side of my body. I tried sitting up but I could feel every bump in the road and it was not pretty.

The amount of relief I felt within the first 24 hours was amazing. My good friend just had a abdominal and had nothing but pain, another friend had LAVH and her pain was not so bad but the recovery time was still too much for me to handle,
this was a bit more money but I am happy with the results so far.
