Recovering from oophorectomy

Good morning all hystersisters. I had my surgery on Friday the 13th (2/13/09) no jokes please. I had the biggest non-joke of all. Surgery wound up being instead of 90 minute out patient surgery to be a 4+ hour surgery. I had a partial hysterectomy almost 2 yrs ago because I had a large cyst where they removed it plus my uterus and cervix but kept my ovaries and tubes but now the ovaries and tubes were going due to bleeding after intercourse. Once in they found alot of other problems, organs cemented to the pelvic sides and called for alot of rearranging. I got out of the hospital on Monday and doing better. Probably is the kangaroo belly, does it every go away? I'm waiting for my postop appt. on Friday to find out about hormones and it will be 2 wks so I can start driving - whew hew! I hear I'm going to be a bear soon....sorta scared of that. I'm currently on multi-vitamins, Enjubia and Paxell, question is there one rx that does it all? What should I be expecting? Sorry this turned out to be a little long.

Recovering from oophorectomy

Hi Trixie! to HysterSisters!

It's nice to have you as a new Sister. There's a lot on this site to explore so feel welcome to have a look around the various forums as you feel up to it.

Abdominal swelling is normal after surgery and it should lessen over time. Be sure to follow your doctor's orders regarding your level of activity and don't hesitate to call with any concerns you have.

There's information about hormones in this link which you may want to browse through (especially articles 8 - 11) before your Friday appointment: Hormone Jungle Articles.

I hope others who are recovering from ovarian surgery will be along soon to share!

Recovering from oophorectomy

Thank you so much for the link with very useful information. I'm definitely going to re-read and take notes for my dr. appt. on Friday.
I've been just so confused with all of this. Again, thank you.

Recovering from oophorectomy

Trixie:

Thanks for posting your experience. I am in the same boat as you, however, not having my surgery until next Thursday 5 March. I am anxious to hear about your continued recovery. I had my uterus and cervix removed 5 years ago. I will be 40 next week so I am a bit scared about hormone replacement. I have talked to several women and read posts here and feel very comfortable about everything. I will tell you this is an excellent source of info and everyone is so open about their experiences which I really love. Good luck to you and thanks for the post.

Thank you for replying back to me and happy early birthday. This certainly is a great resource. I will get back with news of my recovery. I hope to get back to work soon and hopefully I won't be a bear once I return. I'm really scared of that.
Good luck to you.

Good luck to you as well Trixie! It is so wonderful to have people that understand each other; it is so heartwarming to be understood

It sounds like you had your surgery completed laparoscopy style. Mine will be a horizontal cut on my bikini line. I had laparoscopy when I had my hysterectomy. I had a relatively easy recovery luckily. Not looking forward to the 4-6 inch incision and the 2-3 day hospital stay. Hopefully that will be the worst I have to deal with. Best of luck to you! Keep me posted on your hormone replacement.

Take care!

Trixie: Sorry, forgot to mention, one thing I remember about my first surgery is I was so tired for a long time. I am a very active person so that was hard for me to deal with. If you are getting ready to head back to work, please remember to take it easy and certainly ease into it a few hours at a time if you have a job that allows that schedule. It will be a lot easier on you if you can do that.

Thanks for the bday wishes, very sweet.

Hugs

No, actually last year was abdominally and this one started out laparoscopy but turned out to be another abdominal surgery (after the holes were done) so it really was a shock when I woke up from surgery to find that I had been cut again and required a 3 day hospital stay and longer recovery time. I will say that I really expected the original surgery (2 yrs ago) to be a fate worse than death but it really wasn't. I'm a type A personality but i pampered myself and got back to work in 4 weeks (part time) but PLEASE follow the doc's instructions. If not, I've heard you will pay for it. This time I'm pampering myself again as this one was a little more difficult but I feel fine so far and hope to continue to do fine with hormones.
I'm so glad to talk to someone about this in this forum. It really helps.
Please stay in touch and I will do the same. Take care!

Trixie:

SO sorry you had to endure that, especially when you were not expecting it. Sounds like you and I are a lot a like...type A for sure...lol. I am so glad things are going ok with the hrt. I will have to say that is my biggest fear out of everything. I don't want to turn into a ball of emotions and witchiness....lol. Thanks so much for the posts and I am so appreciative for sisters like you. I will keep you posted for sure.

Happy to hear from you and so many other sisters. The support here is awesome. I guess alot of people are afraid of turning into something we aren't - monsters. But with support and the miracles of medicine, all of us will be fine. I'm hopeful.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you and the other sisters.
