Travel early post-op with doctor's okay - what do you think?

I had LAH BSO on 2/23 and home on 2/24. I had a lot of pain the first few days- still hurts to breath deep but I do it! Pathology report prelimary says no cancer. So I am thrilled! Supposed to travel on Friday to Florida for 1 week-- doc says OK if I do nothing but sit in shade. She says no swimming-- what does everybody else think/

Hi!

That sounds awfully early to be traveling. I assume your doctor knows how you'll be traveling and how long it will take to get there. I guess whether you go or not is up to you. I wouldn't have been able to travel so soon after surgery. I was still dealing with gas pains, unpredictable bowels, incision discomfort--typical early recovery issues--that early in my recovery.

If you do go, follow your doctor's orders to the letter and take it easy!

I had my TAH w/LSO on Dec 11th, and had to travel to SE TX for my mother in laws funneral 8 days later. The biggest risk with travel after any surgery is the chance of blood clots in your legs, make sure if you are flying to get up and walk back and forth a few times during your flight and to flex and pull your toes up and roll your ankles to keep the blood flowing while you are sitting down. If you are driving stop often and stretch your legs and walk around, and also make sure that you stay very well hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

I never would have traveled that soon if it were not for the reason that we had to make the trip. We stayed in a motel for 9 days driving back and forth to my inlaws house 30 miles each way every day that was full of family that had come in for the funneral so that I could have a place to get away and just be able to rest when it all got to be too much. I definantly agree that if you are going to make this trip make sure you follow your Dr's instructions, and have enough pain medications with you since it was very inconvenient for me to try and get mine refilled while I was gone.

Good luck and enjoy the sun if you go.

I would say it depends on the type of travel and length of trip. I had the RALH on the Monday before Thanksgiving I was able to travel by car to my in-laws for Thanksgiving (drive is about 15 minutes but our driveway is gravel and very bumpy), same for church the following Sundays. 3 weeks after surgery I did a car trip about 1.5 hours had my pillow to protech my incisions.
