Celiac and GERD

Hello Ladies. I have celiac disease and GERD (also Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I am hoping my recovery will go smoothly. Fiber is a big problem with me because I can't have wheat, rye or barley. I can have oatmeal in moderation (1/2 cup a day). I guess Miralax will be my friend afterwards. I haven't had a hospital stay since being diagnosed and worry about food there too. I guess I will add this to my list of worries until I get this over with.

Re: Celiac and GERD

Hi lmhs1935

Although I don't have celiac disease, I've been thinking about what I ate the first week after my surgery. Although I'm a bread and pasta girl, I just wasn't interested in it for a couple weeks after my hysterectomy. I ate a lot of oatmeal with raisins and yogurt with nuts and berries. Maybe that would work for you as well. Also, it's important to push a lot of fluids. Although it doesn't add fiber, it does help keep things comfortable.

On the day of the surgery, the only thing I could tolerate was 7-up and saltine crackers. When you have your pre-op registration appointment with your hospital, you could ask about whether they have gluten-free crackers of some kind and be sure to let them know about the celiac. I don't imagine you're the first patient they've had with that condition.

There's enough to think about before a hysterectomy without having to worry about fiber. I hope everything comes together for you soon so you can feel confident about heading into your surgery and recovery.

Re: Celiac and GERD

I like gluten-free snack bars like Lara Bars and Bumble Bars. They are both good sources of fiber. Also, nuts are a good source of fiber, especially almonds (sorry, you probably already know that). Good luck to you!

Re: Celiac and GERD

There is a brand of Fiber that is gluten free, I believe it's Fiber Con. The generic form is NOT gluten free, so you have to get the real stuff. I'm sensitive to gluten and have lots of food allergies; my gastro doc is the one who told me that Fiber Con is the only one I could take. Also, when I was in the castle, they were awesome about my food allergies and really took the time to make sure things were ok. Good Luck :smile2:

Thanks everyone. I feel so much better now about having to eat gluten free. This has really helped me a lot.

Re: Celiac and GERD

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Celiac and Hashimoto's about 5 years ago. I have a bunch of suggestions for you. The first is Flax seed. I sprinkle a teaspoon or 2 of this on yogurt or cottage cheese or on my cereal. This is a great source of fiber and omega 3's.

Also check out the Delphi support group:

If you want to contact me outside the forum let me know. I would be happy to talk to you about adjusting to celiac. It is an adjustment, but I have found a lot of good resources and substitutions that I would be happy to share.
