Question about post op visit at doctor...

Ok... I have a really silly question... I had a total abdominal hysterectomy on 3/13 and I have a post op visit with my on 4/7.... I am wondering how he can tell if your stitches inside are healing properly... Does he do a pelvic exam or some type of sonogram or what... I know some of you might think this is a crazy question but I just was wondering... thanks...

Re: Question about post op visit at doctor...

I had a two-week post op, and will have a six-week 04/20. At my two-week, my surgeon basically checked the external incision, checked for bruising, asked a ton of questions, and released me to drive.

He warned me in advance there will be an internal exam at the six-week appointment, which is I believe how he will determine how the inside healing is going. I am not looking forward to this, but understand I will have to go through it.

Re: Question about post op visit at doctor...

I actually had an internal exam at my 2 wk appt. I was suprised, as I thought "NOTHING IN THE VAGINA" meant exactly that.

The nurse practitioner did mine, and I told her I was nervous. She said she'd be very gentle, and she was. It was the easiest pelvic exam I've ever had, and as you might tell from my age listed below, I've had alot of them. I honestly felt nothing, and she even used half a speculum and asked me to bear down, twice. Felt nothing,no pain, no discomfort, no pulling. She was my new favorite person that day.

From now on, I'm going to tell the medical person that I am scared, nervous, etc.-maybe that helps!

It all depends on the sensitivity and caring of the medical person. My dr is excellent, so I know I'll have no problems at my 6 wk. Good luck - I hope yours goes as easily as mine didn!

I have found that on this site, on this forum, there is no such thing as a crazy or too embarrassing-to-ask question!

Re: Question about post op visit at doctor...

Hi, I've had 3 pelvic exams in 7 weeks, one at just under a week out, another at about 3 weeks out, and another today at just over 7 weeks. Not a single one of them has hurt at all. I do take several deep breaths as my doc inserts the speculum, but this is more to just make myself relax than anything else. Tensing up won't help, so tell your doc you're nervous, ask for a warning before he inserts, and take a few deep breaths and RELAX. All will be okay, hope you get good news at your visit!
