Menstrual in the castle?

Hi
My surgery date was moved up from June to May 8th

The timing is, as with many big events in my life, utterly priceless.
The ovary that isn't being given the heave-ho is apparently functioning perfectly and I'm regular as clockwork.

By my calculation, that puts Day One on May 8th!

Is this an issue? How is this managed (getting as far as the surgery table, anyway
Might sound naive but I gather I won't be wearing panties under my hospital gown.

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

Hi Zev-

How funny I just saw the dr on Tuesday and asked that very question as I was bleeding during my appt for another biopsy and he said not a problem what so ever. They said that bleeding is very common is this "department" and they are very use to it. Had to laugh at that one.

I have been bleeding about every 2 weeks lately, so I figured that the same thing will happen on my surgery date (5/11/09). What I was told is that they will put a blue pad underneath me and not to worry about a thing. They did the same thing with the biopsy on Tuesday.

Hope that helps and best wishes for the 8th, I will be thinking of you!

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

Many of us head into OR bleeding! Both times this occurred for me (for a lap and my hysterectomy), the staff was super about handling the situation! They see it all the time!

Do let your doctor's office know what you expect and they will let you know if it will be an issue. More than likely, it won't!

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

I had been bleeding for 2 months when I went to the castle. They gave me a pair of mesh panties with a pad to wear under my hospital gown prior to surgery and when I woke up I realized that they had removed the mesh panties and pad and I wasn't bleeding at all. Haven't bled since, actually! I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure they are used to it.

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

I went in the morning of my surgery, just started my period! They gave me some nice mess panties and a HUGE pad and away I went, came out with a couple of drops of blood and I haven't seen any blood since that day!!

AWESOME!

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

I started while I was waiting to go into surgery. I didn't have any panties on and the nurse just laid a pad on the bed. Not a problem and I didn't have to go through another period.

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

This is a very common question here, as we all have it on our minds. As the others have said, it is not a problem.

If you go in to surgery with your period, you will come out without it.

It's all good!

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

I started my period the day before and like other ladies here, got mesh panties and a pad when checked in. Nurses and the surgeons were actually joking about it, saying that I guess my periods had to make an appearance to say bye.

I was told that as I was bleeding so heavily, I will likely bleed a bit when I start moving around. And sure enough the following morning when pacing the halls, I bled for an hour, soaked one pad and that was it. Only spotting since.

They also said that my cervix was quite open because of my period, so they cut more than planned off. Not sure about the details around it, but she said that because of this it is extremely unlikely that I will ever face the mini periods some women get after hyster.

Re: Menstrual in the castle?

There is bleeding and there is spotting. Most women do spot after the surgery. I did so for 6 weeks. After that initial hour I only needed a pantiliner. In some mornings the spotting was a bit more, but never anything I would truly call bleeding.
