could it be a bowel obstruction

Well ladies, I'm back with the bowel problems again.
A little history. I had TAH/BSO on mar.23/09. Since then I went to the family Dr. week2 about having trouble to go bm, he put me on softeners and senekot. He said it shouldn't cause any pain(cramps). Well it did so I started taking them every other day. I was still having cramps but continued with this. Then on the 18th I had so much pressure on my bottom that I tried to go bm and started bleeding(red blood from my bum) and did that for 6 hours. Sisters said I pushed to hard and it was probably a fissure. So I didn't go to the dr.
Now since then I've had this bad taste in my mouth like someone pooped in my mouth(sorry) and am having nausea and rumbling in my stomach. I still can eat. Depending sometimes I get so nausea I have to lay down until it passes.

The last time I took softeneres and senekot I was in so much pain I will not take it, that was on sunday night. I went to the drug store on monday and she gave me laculose liquid. The pain wasn't as bad but was there.
Now it's friday and I haven't went since Tues.morning.
I'm fed up! I want to go to the dr. but In the back of my mind I can hear the dr. tell me It's IBS and since I just had surgery It will take time..

Any ideas ladies. Should I suck up my pride and go to the dr?

Sorry this is so long ladies. Thanks.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

I am sorry to hear you are still having these issues. I had stomach issues as well. I felt like I had a knot in mine though. I increased my fiber intake and it took care of it. But, yours sounds like it has been going on for awhile. I think you should give the a call. If it truly isn't anything to worry about, maybe he/she can give you some tips on how to get things moving with less pain.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

I wouldn't mess around with this situation, so if it were me, I'd go to the doctor and get checked out. For about 3.5 months after my hyster, my bowels wouldn't settle down. I was on and off stool softeners and my best friend, Gas-X. Now I am not taking stool softeners, because my veggie and fruit intake are taking care of that. Occasionally I still take the Gas-X, and it provides lots of relief.

Be sure to drink lots of water to keep yourself well hydrated. It helps to keep the stool softer. Bleeding is not a normal thing, especially if it lasts for hours. I'd recommending getting your doctor's opinion. My surgeon told me that I could see him for up to 90 days without having to pay more. Perhaps yours has the same policy. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

I would definelty be contacting the doctor again ASAP especially if you are having that taste in your mouth. If it is bowel obstruction that needs to be treated right away. Dont put it off and besides if you don't like what he tells you then you can always get a second opinion if needed but this is your health and if you feel something is wrong then get it looked at right away. Let us know what you decide and how you make out.

p.s. I have been taking senokot since my second surgery I take two a day and never had pain with them so that would cause me to wonder as well.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

I had my TAH on March 24 and had constant gas pain. After 5 days and an enema at the hospital which took care of my gas pain I went home. The next 5 days were the most miserable days of my life. They had told me to go home and have my regular high fiber diet which I did. I had so much gas that I could not sit, stand or lie down. when I would lie down, I could feel the acid rising to my upper respiratory area. I was having a BM every morning until the 4th day. I just felt as if something was stuck in my stomach, when I woke up on the 5th day and took a drink of water, I started to throw up and I felt very full. Gas was no longer escaping and so I went to emergency. It turned out that I had a small bowel obstruction. My stomach was pumped for 3 days. It was great because the gas was able to escape my system. After being in the hospital for 6 days and being able to eat food and pass it, they sent me home. Two days later I was back in emergency having the same procedure. I could not wait for them to start pumping my stomach. It was a quick relief. This time they only pumped my stomach for a day and a gastro-enterologist oversaw my care. My surgeon came and saw me everyday. Apparently my bowel was sleeping or very slow in moving due to the surgery, anesthesia, pain medication, etc. They sent me home to eat a high fiber food but to eat very little, drink lots of water and eat many times during the day. Also go for walks after eating. I'm now in my 5th week and my stomach seems to be normal but I find that I cannot eat nuts or lettuce or raw leaf-like food without suffering some kind of stomach pain.

You might have an obstruction and might be worth checking out. For me, the throwing up after drinking water and the feeling that it just was not going down was the clue.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

Sticking my nose in.
My mom had the same symptoms and it was a bowel obstruction. Go toe the Emergency Room. I would call an ambulance. Hers was caused by an TAH twenty years PRIOR because she had so many adhesions they clogged it up. This can happen for many reasons, however, and trust me, they aren't fun. I have seen two people sufferer them and that taste in your mouth is likely waste that cannot get out. Please let us know and take care.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

Hi, senokot gave me bad cramps also, so my doc gave me colace instead, it helps you to go without any cramps. Good luck.

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

Hi, I had my surgery the same day - and continue to have issues. I can't go - without straining even though my stools are soft. I can't even pass gas without straining... and my newest symtom (TMI) - is that my stools are flat. I was just at my post-op appointment yesterday, and now have to have a colonoscopy done - because there could be an area of particle obstruction. I have been on colace and peri colace - but that didn't help. I have added A LOT of fiber, and finally - I started Miralax - which after 3 days got me going and regular, but the iinstructions said to use only 7 days. Since yesterday, after my post op appointment - the doctor wants me on it long term since it was working. They told me it could take 3 months before my bowels started to work normal, but stressed it was important that they start to get more regular.

I have read up on this as much as I could, and your symtoms don't sound good - with the nausea... I think I would seek attention sooner then later. Best wishes!!!

With the taste in your mouth, I would consider the ER. Not a great sign, and they have the know how to deal with this. Good Luck!!

Re: could it be a bowel obstruction

The bad taste does not sound right. If it were me, I would go to the ER. I have had bm issues all of my adult life (constipation) but never had that happen.
At one point after my TVH, mine were thin and flat. I think some of that was due to my hems. Once I got suppositories to help shrink the swelling it got better. I started Activia two weeks ago, and it has helped some. I hope you get the answers quickly!!!
